My great, great grandfather was John Dorsey (Darcy in Ireland) and he was born around 1811 in Ballinrobe, County Mayo, IRE according to his tombstone.  He married in Ireland (wife might be Anna) and had a son there (Patrick Peter b. 1840).  They left Ireland around 1842 and went to Canada, spending some time there (had another son Francis/Frank in Canada) and then continued to Minnesota, LaCrosse, WI, St. Louis (married his second wife, Bridget Byrne there in 1854) and finally Fulton, IL where he died in 1883.  I have censuses, land records, obituaries and death records for his time in the U.S.

I have checked Irish resources online (Griffiths Valuation, Tithe Applotment Books, Flax Grower’s List of 1796, 1901/1911 census) and even purchased a few Baptism/Marriage records for a John and Patrick Darcy in Co. Mayo.  Although I have found many Darcy’s, I cannot determine if they are related to my Darcy’s. Anyone have any Darcy information or suggestions what to do next?

Thanks

  • Clare,

I have not heard anything back.  Do you suppose the volunteer is still working on it?

    Thanks

  • Christine:

Clare asked me to look at your query since the original volunteer has not responded. Was your family Church of Ireland or RC? I did go on Roots ireland www.rootsireland.ie (and maybe you did also). There are two 1814 John Darcy/D'arcy baptismal records in the Cong Church of Ireland records. I presume the same record is recorded twice. You mentioned that you had purchased some baptismal records so maybe you have already checked it out.

Cong village and civil parish are to the south of Ballinrobe town and civil parish. Cong village and Ballinrobe town are about 17 kilometers apart. Many times immigrants would indicate that they came from the nearest large town rather than their specific townland.

I also checked the Tithes and the nine Darcy records were in parishes much further north. I also checked D'arcy and there was only one-- a W. D'arcy in Funshinagh townland in Cong parish. NOTE spelled Fonshenagh in the Tithes.

From your note, you have done considerable research work. It may be that there are no available records that will allow you to determine specifically where John came from in Ireland.

Let me know if you have any questions.
