I am researching the family of Michael John Ford who married Harriet Sansby (Saulsbury, Salisbury).  Michael John Ford was born c.1807 in Ballinrobe, Mayo and served in the 39th Foot Dorsetshire Regiment which was sent to Australia in 1826 then onto India where he married Harriet then they left India and went to New Zealand for a number of years then onto Australia again.  They had 12 children.  I am trying to locate the names of his parents and verify his date of birth and go back those further steps.  Anyone out there searching for the same?

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find Michael?s birth records as the reality of  finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland that early ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist.

Catholic records for the parish do not start until 1843:

Church of Ireland generally tend to have an earlier start date as it was the official church of the country at the time. Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

It may be an idea to contact South Mayo Family Research for some assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: soumayo@iol.ie

  • Hello Rblakie,

Michael John Ford was my Great great grandfather. His son James was my Great grandfather and his daughter Ivy Therese Tannock was my grandmother.

I've just started researching the family history, so unfortunately I can't really help with any great information. However, I'm delighted to know that we have a family connection and you are searching the family history too.

We were told as kids that a distant relative had married an Indian princess, so it seems there is at least an Indian connection, if not a royal one! I'd love to hear any information you have.

    Kind regards

    Shelley

I've been doing family history for 10+ years and have quite a bit on the Ford & Tannock families.

I'm happy to collaborate if you want to get in touch.
