Delighted to have found this site. My great great grandmother was Catherine Welch born 1852 and baptised in Mayo Abbey. Her parents were Peter Welch and Sarah Keville. Catherine can be found living in her brother Michael's household in Lancashire, England in the 1861 census. Michael was away in the militia at the time. I believe that Peter's father was also named Peter. Any information regarding the family in Balla and how some of the children emigrated to England would be of interest. Catherine's parents remained in Balla to have a number of other children whose birth records I found. I don't know if they ever emigrated. Does anyone know of gravestones carrying their names locally? Also Catherine had a sister of the same name born in 1845 but I haven't found a death record for her. I presumed that my Catherine was named after a deceased sibling. Peter was down as a corn dealer in his daughter's marriage record in 1871.

Col, thanks so much for your response. My gt. gt. Grandmother Catherine Welch married John Edward Cassidy and died in England. However, I was curious when I found a baptism record for a younger sister,1845, also named Catherine of the same parents and district. I know that there was a tradition of naming a sibling after a deceased child, so this Catherine must have died between 1845 and 1852. So far I haven't found that death record. The family lived at Bryze! Probably working on the estate there. Sarah Keville, Catherine's mother, was baptised in Belfast but married in Mayo Abbey to Peter Welch/Walsh in 1844. I don't have her parents but believe that she had a brother Patt and sister Bridget at least. Their names appear in some of the children's baptism records as witness. I believe that there are still Walsh's and Keville's in the Balla/Mayo Abbey area according to a cousin of mine who visited the area a couple of years ago. My father brought the family back to Ireland in 1957, the first time since the emigration around famine times. I now live in Trim but a visit to Balla, particularly Bryze is on my bucket list! Thanks again Col for your interest and help. Martine
