I am looking for information on Brawley's from Castlebar. My research to date I know the following: My GGGrandfather was Henry Brawley b.1813 Castlebar d. 1890 Boston, Mass. He immigrated in 1846 to Boston. I know a lot about what happens when he arrives here in America. I am looking for information about Brawley's in Ireland. Henry's father was John Brawley, records indicate that Brawleys were being born, married and dying in Castlebar in the mid 1800's. Also that a John Brawley lived on Thomas St, Castlebar and Charles lived on Poorhouse Hill Road, both are close together in Knockthomas. Charles is supposed in be buried in the Old Castelbar Graveyard, I visited there and never found the grave. The online records I have been able to put together Charles Brawley's family and by his birthdate he could well be the oldest brawley sibling in Henry Brawley's family. Also I know Henry had a brother born in Castlebar and died in Boston. Also a few on Brawley woman were married in Ballyhean Parish. I am looking for any information about the Brawley's in Castlebar. It appears to be the point from which my family came to america. email: brawleyboys@comcast.net

  • Hi there,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Castlebar (Tuam). These don't start until 1838 for baptismal records and 1824 for marriage records. This is a bit late for you, unless you knew the date when the Brawley's got married in Castlebar. You can access these records at the National Library of ireland, Pos. 4214. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm This is probably too late for you though.

You at least know a name - John Brawley. You could therefore try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

There is also a Freeholders list dated 1832-39 for County Mayo. This gives an alphabetical listing showing residence and valuation. This is located at the National Archives of Ireland, OP 9974/116. There is another dated 1842, OP/1842/71.

Another document worth checking is the 1838-48 Reproductive Loan Fund records. This covers many areas in Mayo, but it includes Castlebar. The full list covers more than 4,000 individuals. This is also located at the National Archives UK, T 91.

You might find the County Library in Mayo very useful: http://www.mayolibrary.ie/en/LocalStudies/GenealogyResources/ It includes (although not on the website itself - you may need to contact them directly) inscriptions from the Old Graveyard in Castlebar.

Could you please post your message on the Ballyhean parish page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/ballyhean-mayo

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

    Genealogist (Ireland XO)
