Hello,

I am helping a friend who is descended from a line of Grealy/Greallys from Crossard.  His grandfather was Patrick Henry Grealy who was born in 1874 to Thomas Greally (1849 -1932) and Bridget Henry (1851-1935).  They married in 1870 in Ahgamore parish.  Patrick Henry Grealy emigrated to the United States before 1900.  Thomas and Bridget had a large family, Patrick had at least eleven siblings:

Margaret* b 1870

Catherine b 1870

John b 1872

Dominick* b 1877 - d Crossar 1960 (Dominick married Bridget Lydon in 1923.  I do not know if they had children.)

Bridget b 1880

Mary Ann* b 1882

Thomas* b 1884

John b 1886 (presumably the earlier John had passed away)

Kate* b 1889

Agnes* b 1892 (emigrated to the US at some point - I am not sure what happened after that - but I am looking)

Nora b 1896 (When Dominick died in 1960 the "informant" was "sister" Nora Waldron - in 1932 when the father, Thomas, died she was also the informant but was listed as "Nora Grealy, daughter," so she must have married between 1932 and 1960).

In the 1911 Census of England six of the siblings were living in Lancashire (asterisked above) - but they did not all stay there. I am still working at some details - but this is what I know so far.

    Not sure what information you are looking for. The 1855/1856 Griffiths Valuation head of hosuehold listing for Aghamore civil parish (first link below) showed a number of Grealy records but only one in Crossard.-- Patrick who was likely the father of Thomas. Do you have the civil marriage record from 1870? 

    I went back to the Tithe listings. The year is not shows but it would be late 1820s or early 1830s. Crossard was spelled Crissard and there were two Greallys-- Michael and Ed listed. (see second link).

    I then located the 1901 and 1911 census records (third and fourth links). The 1911 census indicates that Bridget had twelve total children with ten living as of March 31, 1991.

    Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.  I realize that I spent so much energy on the background I never managed to get out the question!

    I had not researched Thomas and Bridget's line back prior to their generation.  I have been researching Grealy families from around Ballyhaunis for about 10 years or more and I know that some townlands can have multiple lines of Grealys going back in time to where the link between them is not clear.  That did not seem to be the case with Crossard and your references to Griffiths and the Tithes seem to support that idea.

    So, this descendant I am communicating with is interested to find living family in the area.  His link in time is not very remote but no connections were preserved.  He is interested to find out if there are any relations still in Crossard or the vicinity, or if any can be found at all.

    Use the Residential TAB and search for grealy in County Mayo. You should get four records and one is from Aghamore. Our privacy rules prevent me from providing the info directly.
