James and Mary are my Great-Great-Great-grandparents. I have found what appears to be reliable information on them:
James was born around 1812, died Nov 1847 possibly in Westport, Mayo, Connacht.
Mary was born around 1819, died 16 May 1879
Married 21 May 1838, Achill, Ireland
Both are buried with their son, Mathius (my great-great-grandfather) in Aughagower Cemetery. Ancestry.com even has a story about how the headstone was purchased.
My question is in regards to finding information on their parents and siblings. One source I found references Patrick and Honor "McC" as possible parents for James, but I have no good way of verifying the accuracy. I have found nothing on Mary Lyons beyond the dates listed above. Are church records the only option for records stretching back to the early 1800s?

Pete:
Welcome back!
None of the parishes in West Mayo have records back to the early 1800s. I think Aughagower/Aghagower has the earliest records and they start in 1828. Here is the link to the register for Aughagower http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1037 If you go to the map in the upper-right hand corner, you can switch to other parishes and see when their records start.
