My name is Mary Herrity. My great great grandfather Thomas Herrity was born in County Mayo near Erriff in 1832. He had a sister Sarah who was born in 1831. As the story goes, Thomas left Ireland in his teens, along with a cousin by the last name of Hoben(Hoban). I believe he arrived in the US around 1848. His sister Sarah emigrated to Scotland about 1853-spent 14 years there before coming to the US in 1867. I do not know their parents name. It appears Erriff has a few potential locations as it three times as a town land in County Mayo. I do believe the one my family came from is near Westport. I have found Heraty and Hoben in a 1901 Census...living in Erriff town land in I think this parish. I am going to also guess John is a common name due to Irish tradition of naming children. If anyone has information to share about my family names or information about identifying where Erriff might be, I would appreciate it.

Hi Mary,
You might like to have a look at the Tithe Applotments which are free at titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/
There are 14 Heraghtys in Mayo in the 1820's including some in Aughagower & 94 Hobans
There are a few Thomas Heraghty birth/baptisms around 1832 in Mayo & all are from Aughagower. Annoyingly there are none for Sara around that time so I couldn't narrow down the four except that the last has Bridget Hoban as an informant

Doon is near Westport
Griffiths Valuation has 26 Heraghtys in Aghagower - all in Westport but no mention of Erriff!

Hi again Mary,
Your question has got me thinking!
I notice that the following are Townlands / Streets in Erriff according to the census site:
- Derrintin
- Erriff
- Glenacally
- Glendavock
- Glenummera
- Letterass
- Lettermaglinsk
- Srahatloe
- Srahlea
- I also notice that in the last record above (which mentions Hoban) that Thomas was from Derrintin which increases the chances that this is your man.
- I had a look at my cd Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo & found Thadu Heraghty who was buried in DRUMMIN Cemetery 1848 aged 57.
- 10 Heratys Aughower Old; Aughower RC; Carrowkennedy; & Glenisland
- IF Thomas is your Thomas's father, the best match for memorial is this one from Drummin:
- Lord have mercy on
the soul of Thomas Hera
ty who died May 1st
1871 aged 59 years - Drummin graveyard info:This graveyard is situated about 5 miles south of Westport on the road to Leenane. Tom ‘Latin' Duffy of Linavesta one of the few local masons in the county who are still remembered carved many late 19th century memorials. There is a modern church beside the graveyard.
- I couldn't find a record for Catherine but got this one on rootsireland.ie/:
- Name:CatherineHeraghtyDate of Death:18-Dec-1864
Age:80yParish / District:Louisburgh districtAddress:TawnyancriverCounty:Co. MayoStatus:Widow (Female)Denomination:Civil ParishOccupation:FARMER'S WIDOWSex:Female

Name:Pat HobanCounty:
Address:Tawnyancriver
Notes:INFORMANT GRANDSON
- Note the surname of informant grandson.
- On closer inspection she would have been born 1780 & he 1812 so different generations.

I noticed the mention of Drummin. My family was from Drummin/Drummindoo. It is so helpful to read other people's inquiries and answers. I have some more places to look now. Thank you Mary and Col.

Col,
I cannot tell you how tickled I am to get a reply so quickly.
I thank you for your effort and time.
I found something related to Sarah(1851Census) that I am going to try to upload. I'm also going to upload a 1900 Cenus I have saved that denotes Erriff Townland and under Glenumerra there are actually a Hoban and a Heraghty listed together. I realize the latter date may mean nothing but interesting would like to know your thoughts on these two sources.
I will be looking into your findings! Do you have an interest in the surname? I find it so impressive you would take the time to research!!!
Mary
