I am looking for information on Michael Horan and Winifred White who were married abt. 1830 and lived in Drumindoo. I think the horan's and whites lived next to each other.

  • Hi there,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Aughagower (Tuam). These date from 1828 for baptismal records and 1854 for marriage records. You can find these at the Nayional Library of Ireland, Pos.4210, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, film 1279209 item 19-20; 1279210, 1-3. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

You can information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

You could also check the following:

1832-39 Freeholders. Alphabetical listing showing residence and valuation. National Archives of Ireland OP 1839/138.

1838-48 Reproductive Loan Fund records. Records of loan associations... includes many areas. Covers more than 4,000 individuals. UK National Archives, T 91. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

1842 Freeholders. National Archives of Ireland, OP/1842/71.

1845 Defendants at Mayo Summer Assizes (Notebook of Justice Jackson). National Archives of Ireland, M. 552-49.

1850 Voters' lists. South Mayo Family History Research Journal, 1996.

Hopefully someone in the local community will recognise the names and be able to help you further.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,
