I am researching my ggmother who came to Australia in 1859 onboard the Panama with other Irish orphan girls from the Workhouse at Ballinrobe. I have found a person who says Bridget was baptised in Aghagower Parish, Co Mayo. Her name was Bridget (Biddy) McDonough. Her father was Michael McDonough (deceased 1850) and her mother Mary (alive 1850 assume in Workhouse, Ballinrobe). Shipping records say she was 16 years of age so she must have been born about 1834. She married in Australia and never returned to Ireland. Is there any website with online records for that period.

  • The RC baptism and marriage records for Aughagower parish appear to start in 1828. Baptisms from 1828 and marriages from 1854 are on the NLI site (free). For marriages 1828 – 1854, you may need to use one of the subscription sites such as rootsireland. Here’s the link to the NLI site.

    Bev:

I looked at Roots Ireland and the only record I saw was an 1844 baptismal record in Aglish RC parish which is Castlebar and not too far north from Aghagower RC parish. Your note indicates Bridget was 16 in 1859 when she came to Australia which would mean an 1843 year of birth so this 1844 record may be the record for your Bridget.

I also looked for marriage records and there were two in 1843.

2/21/1843Kilcolman RC    Michael McDonough and Mary Loughlin

2/16/1843 Crossboyne/Tagheen RC Michael Donoough and Mary Mannion

12/12/1835 Kilconduff/Swinford RC Michael McDonagh and Mary Henry

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Sincere apologies for not replying earlier but I had a death in family and am just getting back to my family history research. Roger, I had a typo in my post. Bridget arrived in Australia in 1850 not 1859. Shipping record says she was 16 so I believe she was born about 1834. I will get busy with the NLI site and hope for a breakthrough.
