Patrick Malone - b 1854, Rathcor, Co Louth, was my g grandfather.

He immigrated to NZ in 1876 as a single man.

I have no information on any other family members - can anyone help, or direct me please.

Thanks.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking for information on Patrick in Church records? If you can find his birth record it will give you his parents names. You then may be able to find out if he had any other siblings.

Most Catholic records are held locally, so you may have to write to the parish priest for possible assistance. One website which may help you though is the irishtimes. Here, they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. Rathcor is in the Roman Catholic parish of Carlingford South. To see what records are available in this parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Louth&parish=Carlingford-South&churchid=195

For Church of Ireland records go to http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

If you can find Patrick's father's name, you can then do a search for him in Griffith's Valuation. This is a property search that was carried out in Ireland between 1848 and 1864. You can search this here:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

You could also search for any family members that remained in Ireland in the 1901 and 1911 census records here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Some other websites which may help you are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

    Family Search: https://familysearch.org/

    Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/louth/index.html

    Louth County Library: http://www.louthcoco.ie/en/Services/Library/Genealogy-Research-Sources/

I hope that this helps. If you find any more information on Patrick remember to post it. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello

Thankyou for your reply. It's St Patrick's Day here in New Zealand as I write this!

There was a lot to digest in your email. I had looked at most of the links.

    • 'Pat' Malone emigrated in 1876 on the 'Waitara'. His death/marriage cert in NZ mentions no parents. In Auckland "Louth" was interpreted as 'South!' He travelled as a single man.

    • Can you tell me how I contact the Parish Priest in this case please.

    • I looked up 1901/11 Census in Ireland. I saw more than 1 reference to a Stephen Malone in Rathcor. Because Patrick called one of his sons Stephen, I wondered if there was a connection.

    • Are there any Malones still living in Rathcor? Rathcor is on his death cert as his birthplace.

I have travelled to Ireland several times in my life, but never had any family info. to look into. Now I have a start - but need some more. My sister is travelling over later in the year and I'm trying to find out as much as I can for her to look into.

Thankyou for your help so far.

    Hi Essie,

Rathcor is in the Roman Catholic parish of Carlingford South. Here are the contact details for the parish priest there:

Very Rev. Brian Mac Raois PP,

    Parochial House,

    Chapel Hill,

    Carlingford,

    Co. Louth.

    Phone: +353 (0) 42 937 3111   Email: cairlinnparish@eircom.net

Hopefully the parish priest may also be able to give you some advice regarding any Malones that are still living in the Rathcor area.

Best of luck with your research, it would be great if you were able to find something concrete before your sister?s visit!

    Kind regards,

    Emma

  • Hello Pat

Thank you so much for your letter. That was very thoughtful of you. Yes, I had been looking at it with interest too.

I meant to contact you guys last year - through your site we found 'our Paddy!' My sister went to Ireland last year and met up with the Malones in Carlingford.

I think I've attached an article about her visiting them from "The Argus' 14/08/2013. Cooley News. P 64.

So thankyou very much for all your help. I've been looking for Paddy Malone, my g gf for a very long time now.

I've just written to my new Malone cousins asking them about Flanagans & Co. I know there is a Quinn connection.

I'll be in touch and thanks again for writing.

BTW - I think I've written previously that Patrick Malone came out on the 'Waitara.' That's incorrect it was the 'Orari.' His future wife Mary/Maria Coughlan (sp?) came out from Roscommon on the 'Waitara'. Now, that's another story altogether. I know nothing about her and have not been able to connect with any Coughlans here in NZ, even though the whole family came out. I have to do some more research then get back on your site and look for her......

    Regards

    Essie

  • Hi Essie

Have just seen your query re Malones. My relationship to Patrick is through his mother, Catherine Malone (nee Mackin). Catherine and my geat, great grandmother, Jane Callaghan (nee Mackin) were sisters. No doubt by now you will have found out what's available in NZ.

I'm in Auckland, where are you?

  • Dear essie malone and Joanna,

I'm hoping you have both enjoyed further successes! I hit a wall with my GG grandfather And (Andy?) Malone (B 1810). He was a tailor and had a shop in town somewhere, but beyond that I have nothing.
