Looking for the O'Ferralls of Ballinree, co. Longford. My ancestor Catherine O'Ferrall (daughter of Ambrose O'Ferrall and Anne Dillon) married George Lambert of Kildare in 1755. Catherine's family hailed from Ballinree, and I'd love to find out a lot more about them.

  • Hello from Longford,

There were indeed Farrells/Ferralls in Ballinree, which is between Ardagh and Edgeworthstown, but situated in Ardagh parish. The parish registers there begin in 1793, which is of course later than the time you mention. However, the family continued to live in the area for many years, as far as I know. There is a family gravestone in one of the old cemeteries in Ardagh village and I will get the inscription for you.

A member of the family, 'Bonny Pat' Farrell was a United Irishman and a leader in the 1798 Rebellion in the area. He was killed at the Battle of Granard, 5 September 1798, and the story is told that his horse returned home riderless, which was the sign to his family that he was dead.

I will send you details of the inscription when I get them.

    Kind regards,

    Martin Morris
