Hugh Dooner remairred to a woman names E. Tully around 1883. She died in 1901. They had three children:

  • Rose Ann born Dec 1886. Settled in Easton, Pennsylvania 1899. Died 7 Aug 1905.
  • Bridget "Delia" born May 1888

Hugh Doonan died 20 Apr 1906 in Enybegs. His neighbor Michael Murphy is mentioned in his will.  Which makes me think this children had all left the country by that point.

I found the death index record for Bridget Dooner in 1881 and the likely marriage index record for Hugh and Ellen in the first quarter of 1886. The name was shown as Ellen Tally. See records below. I also took a look at the 1911 census for Enybegs and found a record where there is a19 year old Michael Dooris living and working with a Michael Murphy family. ( Probably the same Michael Murphy in the will).  When I look at the actual census record the surname looks like Dooner. So I'm wondering if this is the youngest son of Hugh. The link for the census record is below. You can get copies of the death and marriage records from the General Register Office for around 4 euros each. If you are interested in getting copies let me know and I will forward instructions. By the way, the only death record I found for a Hugh Dooner was in 1907 Since you said the death and will were in 1906, I assume I have the wrong Hugh Dooner.

  • Well, the date of his death is stated in his will, but the will is dated 1913.  SOooo, it is possible it could be a mistake, off by a year?

Great find on the census! I do believe that is Michael.  I feel silly for having not looked at the orginal, I know better.  Do you have any suggestions for tracking family AFTER the 1911 census?  I will try military records, as he probably would show up in the WWI records...

I'm curious what information is usually on these records? So far I've only worked with parish records.

Thank you so much for the help!

  • Megan:

A civil death record would show the date of death, cause of death, location and the name of the informant and sometimes the relationship of the informant to the deceased.

A civil marriage record would show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living at the time of the marriage.

There is not a lot you can do after 1911. Depending on the circumstances, I look at the civil index records for deaths and marriages. In Michael's case I looked for marriage records. There were two marriage index records (one in 1921 and the other in 1924) recorded in the Longford registration district which possibly could be him.

If you would like the instructions and the marriage index records for Michael Dooner in 1921 and 1924, let me know.

  • Yes please, I would like the instructions thank you.  I looked up the index records on those two marriage records, but like you say, its hard to know if they are for him without more information.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.
