Hi Eilish,

Thank you for the information.

We have serveral questions :

Is Kilmore Lower a town in Clonguish Parish?

In the census of 1901 and 1911 where the McNally's are listed , are first names listed.  We are looking for John and Sarah (Cunningham) McNally and possibly his father and mother.

Is there anyway that we could find this cenus on line?

The census showed McNally's in Kilmore Lower but we have birth records for James McNally showing that he was born in Killashee, Longford, Ireland on July 24, 1868 and his parents are listed as John McNally and Sarah Cunningham - can you explain why the McNallys do not show up on a census for Killashee?

Are other family members listed, such as John McNally's brothers or sisters or other children?

Are there any records showing when people left for America?

Are there cemetery records we can research?

We know we have asked alot of questions.  Any information is helpfull, even directions on where to look for this information would be usefull.

Thank you for your help

  • Hi Steven,

apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

    To answer your questions:

Kilmore Lower is a townland in Clonguish parish and borders Killashee parish.

.If you look up a website called longford.ca which is devoted to Moffatt family genealogy there are many useful maps of Killashee, Clonguish and Longford which identify the townlands. I have tried to send you the link but for some reason I cannot.

The link for the 1901/1911 census of Ireland is as follows - there are McNallys listed as living in Kilmore Lower and I suspect these may be relatives.  There is no family of that name living there today but I am in the process of contacting some of the older inhabitants of the area to see if they have any recollection of the name.  It is quite possible that the McNallys may have married into some of the families still living in the area. All previous census records for Ireland were destroyed in the uprising in Dublin in the early 1900s.  But there may be some local sources that might be of benefit and I will continue to search for these.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

There were Cunninghams living at Clonberla, Killashee in the Griffiths valuation and it is possible that they may have been connected also.   I

If you google Griffiths Valuation for Ireland - this was a land survey carried out in 1850 approx - there are McNallys living at Kilmore then.

In the meantime I will try to obtain more information that may be of help.

    Regards,

    Eilish

  • Hello Steven,

Not sure if my great grandfather and yours are one in the same, but this is what I have:

According to cemetary records and headstone at Holy Cross Cemetary in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, James McNally was born in Ireland on April 21, 1868 (I'm unsure of the exact location).  He wed Alice F. Sees in Wetzel, West Virginia on February 12, 1900 (I believe she was from Parkersburg, West Virginia, born on January 25, 1882).  They had 7 children:  Eugene, Robert, Leo, Dora, twins Burma and Prome (my grandmother), and Sally.  They lived in Burma, British India, while James was working for Burmah (Burma) Oil Company.  My grandmother and her twin were born in Prome, Burma, in 1914 (hence their names).  They also lived in Warren, PA, and eventually moved to Waco, Texas, in 1923.  They (James and Alice) are both burried at Holy Cross Cemetary, along with my grandmother (Prome McNally Hewitt).

I'm still trying to find more information, but actual birth dates haven't proven to be very reliable.  My mother and I are trying to get our search rolling, so any information you have--if in fact we share the same great grandparents--would be helpful.

    Thank you

  • My wife is the historian, but your grandmother is my great aunt.  My father, son of Eugene, James also, was said to have been in contact with her many years ago, by phone and letters.  But you hit the jackpot, we have been reseaching for years.  Althought little has been found in Ireland because most of the records were destoried in a fire in 1848.  James parents were John & Sara Cunningham McNally, from Killashee, Longford, Ireland.  Great Grandma Alice was from WV and we have traced that line back many generations.  Some have colorful lives others not.  But you come from very good and hard working stock. Great Grandpa James family came to Warren also,  most are buried in Warren.  My wife is very excited to send you any info we have, its a lot.  She is looking for pictures of James and Alice, we have a picture of GG Alice and Eugene and Robert.  Next big question?  Where are you and how do we get in contact with you.  We are in a very small rural area in PA about 60 miles west of Warren.  Albion, PA  Our phone number is 814-756-3258 it's a land line with our answering machine, we are a little hard to reach sometimes, both of us are retired.  My email address is   irishreb@windstream.net  Hope to hear from you soon.  Steve & Allene

  • There is an ad in the New York Freeeman's Journal / Catholic Register 25 March 1843 looking for info on  McNalley from Killashee. He arrived in US in 1834 ? ,- he  was last heard of in Maryland and intended to go to Missouri - his brother Robert with a c/o address in Brooklyn was anxious to hear from him. This is probably a previous generation.
