I am trying to trace the lost years of my father, James Hudie McLaughlin, born 1871. Emigrated to America (no details), but returned and married my mother, Mary Ann McLaughlin nee Glackin, born 1885 at Seaview Hotel, Ballygorman, on 18th January 1904 at The Star of The Sea Church.

They then went on lived on Inistrahull Island then returned to the mainland in 1928, and lived in the Park House.

The information I am seeking is from his birth in 1871 to when he got married in 1904. They were on the island according to the 1911 census. I have the marriage certificate, but there was no trace of his birth. I would appreciate any information whatsoever.

I recently finished transcribing the 1901 census for Clonca parish including Inishtrahuil. See the record below. Was Ellen his mother? I assume James was in America.

I also looked at the civil birth index records for 1871 and found three James McLaughlins in the Inishowen registration district. The three births were recorded in Vol 2 page 166, Vol 12 page 153 and Vol. 7 page 163. You can contact the General Register Office and get a copy of the correct record for around 4 euros. Assuming he was born in Inishtrahuil, you can ask the GRO to find the James from Inishtrahuil. If you want to go this way, let me know and I will forward instructions.
