I am looking for more information on my 3rd Great Grandfather, William Scanlon.   According to his military discharge paperwork he was born in Killon, Longford in 1803.  He enlisted in Dublin on 11 Aug 1821.   According to one of his daughter's birth certificate (Jane) his was was mary Carney. After his military discharge  27 Jun 1845 he settled in England.

Thanks.

  • Joan:

There is no townland or parish in Co. Longford called Killon. There is a parish called Killoe so possibly that is the area he was from originally. Unfortunately, the RC records for that parish do not start until 1826 so it is unlikely that a baptismal record is available.

  • Roger, my name is Michael Scanlan my Great Great Grandfather Matthew Scanlan lived in Ballycoreny near Kiilaloe,  He was born around 1815.  He married Catherine Devan (Limerick).  He left Ireland in 1853  with his family and moved to Norristown Pennsylvania..  My Great Grandfather Patrick Scanlan had a large family and one of his sons was William Scanlan (my great uncle).  Not sue if this is ofa any assitance but you are rigth about Killaloe Parish.
