I’m Eduardo Merino MacDonnell, I’m Argentine and now I’m living in Spain.

I’m the great-great-grandson of John McDonnell and Kate Duffy, and Michael Murtagh and Winifred Mannion. According the family tale all them were from Co. Longford and went to Argentina in the middle of the 1800’s.

MURTAGH and MANNION families

Michael Murtagh’s parents were Michael Murtagh and Rose Riekand. Michael and Rose had, at least, 2 children: Michael (according Argentine census data he was born in Ireland in 1829) and Mary (according Argentine census data she was born in Ireland in 1838).

Winifred Mannion’s parents were Thomas Mannion and Anne Kelly. Thomas and Anne had, at least, 2 children: Michael (according Argentine census data he was born in Ireland in 1832) and Winifred (according Argentine census data she was born in Ireland in 1839).

Michael Murtagh married to Winifred Mannion before 1861 (I don’t know if they married in Ireland or Argentina) and had 11 Argentine children: Rosa, Ana, Miguel, Tom?s, Juan Jorge, Mar?a, Br?gida, Marcelina, Eduardo, Judith (o Julia) and Victoria.

NOTE: Michael Mannion married to Mary Murtagh and also went to Argentina.

McDONNELL and DUFFY families

Kate Duffy’s parents were William Duffy and Mary Shanly from Ardagh Parish (Co. Longford). They married in Feb. 1818 and had 3 children James that was born in 1823, William that was born in 1825 and Kate that was born in 1834. James, William and Kate went to Argentina, James and Kate had descendants in Argentina. Regarding William I have no other information.

John McDonnell married to Kate Duffy in Ireland before July 1857, as Kate travel to Argentina as Kate McDonnell. They had 4 Argentine children: Mar?a, Catalina, Santiago and Elena.

Regarding John McDonnell I have no other information.

Thanks in advance

I looked at Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie for the marriage record for John and Kate in the Ardagh RC records. Roots has Ardagh records back to the late 18th century. Roots is a pay site. There is an 1856 record in Ardagh for a marriage involving a John MacDonnell but when I added Duffy as the bride's surname the record disappeared (which is a clue that the surname for the marriage was other than Duffy). Don't know if this was a marriage for a completely different couple or Duffy was transcribed incorrectly. You would have to register and pay to see this record to know for sure.

I also looked at the 1854 Griffiths Valuation for Ardagh civil parish. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/longford/ardagh.htm

There was a John McDonnell in Cartrongarrow townland and a William Duffy in Barney townland. A couple of disclaimers. If your John McDonnell didn't lease land that this may not be him. If Kate's father was deceased in 1854 then the record would be for another William Duffy.
