  • Kevin:

James and Ellen were married in 1884 at the Cathedral in Limerick. See the transcription record below which shows where they were from and the names of their fathers.

James Mangan was deceased by 1901 (Ellie was shown as a widow). I looked for civil death index records and found two in 1899 and one in 1900. I think the 1900 record is most likely.

I checked the online Irish phone book and there was one entry in the Shanagolden area. No idea if there is a connection. Here is the link to the site.http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/#

  • Hi Kevin,

I am the Ireland Reaching Out Parish Liaison for Shanagolden. Is your tree at Ancestry.com? Are you MANGANK57? If the MANGAN (kevinsnr)_AutoBackup tree is not yours, you will want to check it out as this tree has several family members. This tree claims that James was born in 1833 in Carhue (near Shanagolden) Ireland. He died 4 Feb 1895 in Kingstown, Ireland. There are two son's named John Mangan in this tree, but they appear to be the same person. John (James and Helen's son) was born abt 1887 in Shanagolden and died in Punchbowl NSW, Australia.

I'll contact you again when I've learned if this is your tree or not.

    Thanks,

    Patti Hacht

  • Hi Patti,

Both MANGANK57&MANGAN(kevinsnr)_Auto_backup are on Ancestry .com.au,i use MANGANK57 as my main tree i am trying to delete the other one.I have James Mangan's Baptism as 24/4/1833, his marriage to`Ellen Riordan 24/4/1884. James Death 11/7/1899 at Carhew, what i have not got is anything on grandmother Ellen Riordan when she was born when she died. I have her in 1901 census as widow with five children----John(my father)13--Kathleen12--James 9--Patrick 7--Margaret 3. Ellen was 40 so she must have been born in early 1860 odd.John& Margaret are missing from 1911 census. My father John was born 31/5/1887.I dont know if  there are any old photo's.Our home in Punchbowl was named Fleanmore after i think one of dad's relatives house.Any more info i can get would be good so it can be handed to our grand children. Thanks for your help. Regards Kevin.

  • Hi Kevin,

I will email my contact at the parish and see what she can find regarding Ellen Riordan's birth and death dates. Her baptism should also name her parents.

I'll get back with you when I've learned more.

    Best wishes,

    Patti

  • Hi again, Kevin,

I was searching in some West Limerick genealogy books that I have at home and discovered that the Mangan name was frequently switched to Madigan. That's really not much of a stretch to see where they could be the same name. Anyway, the Madigan surname is very popular in Co Limerick. My 2nd great grandmother was Mary Ann Madigan, born around 1824.

From Poverty to Promise: the Monteable Emigrants 18328-58, I found the following:

    • A Bridget Mangan going to her Aunt, Mrs. Sullivan in Emerald Hill, Australia. Bgt sailed on the Hotspur, which arrived in Melbourne on 12 Oct 1857. Bgt married Owen Tierney (b 1824 Shanagolden) in 1860  in Victoria. Owen died 1870 Victoria. Owen and Bgt's dau Bgt was born 1861 Emerald Hill. She died as an infant.
    • Also sailing w/Bgt were a couple families of Madigans.
    • There are also suggestions that Mangan girls married into the Tierney and Sheedy families
    • Also a mention of a John Madigan who sailed for Australia with his mother, (Margaret?) the daughter of Richard/Michael Mangan and Johanna Sheehan. This family sailed to Port Philip on the John Barry before 1841. They are listed in the 1841 Melborne Census.
    • Mary Mangan was the wife of Frnacis Sheady, a shoemaker in Shanagolden. Mary is said to have died after 1838 Ballycormak, Co Limerick. Francis died aft 1838 also Ballycormak. Their children, Thomas and Catherine travelled on the Aliquis to Australia. Thomas married Catherine Costello at St. Mary's in Sydney 6 Feb 1840. Catherine married Patrick Griffin 4 Oct 1841.

According to West Limerick Families Abroad, the surmane Mangan seems interchangable with Manion and Manning. There are also several instances of Mangan's in this book:

    • Ellen Mangan b 1806 probably Shanid, Co Limerick (dau of  ?   Mangan and Hanora Sheahan) married -19 Feb 1833 to Thomas Bourke b 1812 Shanagolden. Thos died in Shanagolden 24 Dec 1868 and is buried in Knockpatrick Cem. There is more info about this Ellen and her relationship to the Kelly family, if indeed Ellen is related to you.
    • Ellen Mangan (dau of Thomas and Anastasia Mangan d 6 May 1886 Sth Melb. (Australia?) Ellen mar Garrett Fitzgerald 29 June 1866 at The Priory, Middle Park.Garrett's father, also named Garrett was b cir 1795 in Dooncaha, Co Limerick. Garrett's (junior) mother was Mary Condon. Ellen and Garrett had 8 children born in Oz.
    • Mary Mangan  of Askeaton marr Patrick Greene (b 1824 in Askeaton) on 8 Feb 1860 in Askeaton. The couple resided at Trondeely South. Patrick and Mary Greene emig. to New York, USA about 1875. They had 11 children. Michael Mangan was a baptismal sponsor for some of their children in 1861 and 1867.
    • Margaret Madgan (b cir 1788, dau or Richard/Michael Mangan & Johanna Sheahan) marr Martin Madigan, linen weaver b cir 1777 Shanagolden. Marr cir 1810, probably Shanagolden. Margaret, her widowed son John, his son Patrick and her daughters Mary & Ellen were included in the first group of Monteagle emigrants which arrived in Sydney on the Aliquis on 16 Mar 1839. John's wife died abt 3 weeks before sailing to Oz, and John smuggled his young son on board. Unable to find work in Sydney, the family saided on the John Barry for Melbourne, arriving on 28 Apr 1839.
    • James Mangan/Manning/Manion m cir 1841 Askeaton Bridget Sheehy (b cir 1823 Askeaton, dau of John & Mary Sheehy.) Bgt died 14 Sept 1881, bur Rookwood RC Cem, Sydney.  Following James' death, Bgt marr c 1846 James Lysaught. Mary Mangan/Manning/Manion b cir 1841 marr Patrick Gorman 16 Jan 1861 at Menagle (near Campbelltown) NSW. Mary Mangan/Manning/Manion arrived in Sydnen on the Lady Keennaway in 1854 with her mother, stepfather and family. Mary Mangan/Manning/Manion and Patrick Gorman had 8 children.
    • Maurice Mangan b cir 1799 Shanagolden. Marr Mary _?_ , Maurice died before 1855  in Shanagolden. Maurice and wife Mary Unknown had one daughter, Mary Mangan b cir 1833 in Shanagolden. Mary emigrated to Aus and arrived in Sydney on the Matoaka 24 May 1855.
    • Thomas Mangan b Limerick marr Anastasia Egan prob in Shangolden cir 1825. They had  7 children born in Shanagolden. At least 3 of their children emigrated to Aus. This family may have included a son Thomas b 20 Dec 1844 who died 4 June 1921 in San Francisco, California, USA. This Thomas was buried in Kilbradan Cemetery (Shanagolden or Aus.?) His sister Anastasia erected a headstone to his memory.

Both of the authors of West Limerick Families Abroad were Australian, and are deceased. I would strongly suggest trying to obtain a copy of both of these West Limerick books. I believe they are essential to any West Limerick research.

I am waiting for a reply from Chriss at the church in Shanagolden. If I don't hear from her by Wednesday, I will email her again.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello again Kevin,

I've heard from the administrator at Shanagolden.  She checked in Shanagolden, but did not find anything. Apparently Glin was at one time part of Shanagolden, and the following rcds were found:

    Morning Patti,

Well, I went to the Presbyter in Glin and looked at the Baptismal Records and this is what I found:

Childs Name                        D.O.B.                                                 Parents                                                                      God Parents
Catherine Riordan             3/3/1854                             John Riordan & Catherine Culhane                      Patrick Riordan & Ellen Stanley

Ellen Riordan                      1/10/1855                                    "                          "                                             Con Riordan & Maria Houlihan

Mary Riordan                      2/7/1857                                      "                          "                                             Dan Shanahan & Anna Stanley

Con Riordan                        29/10/1857                                  "                           "                                            Con Riordan & Ellen  Culhane

Daniel Riordan                    15/4/1861                                    "                          "                                             Patrick Riordan & Hanora Riordan

Michael Riordan                 17/4/1863                                    "                          "                                             Patrick Riordan  &  Catherine Riordan

Daniel Riordan                    27/5/1865                                    "                          "                                             Mary Riordan & Mary Collins

    Margaret Riordan              11/11/1868                                  "                          "                                             Michael O' Connor  & Brigit O' Connor

John Riordan                       2/6/1883                                      "                          "                                             Robert Culhane  & Maria Moore

This is all I found as you can see the Date of Births must be incorrect as there were two children born in 1857 two months apart so I presume that should read Con Riordan 29/10/1859 as there seems to be 2 years between the births of their children.  The only Ellen   was born 1/10/ 1855 it is 5/6 years too early for your figures.  There are 2 Daniels but that was not unusual as if one  Daniel died when the mother  had  another child they called him the same name.  I hope this information is of use to you. If I can be of any further help to you, please let me know.

I hope this info is helpful to your research. Sorry for the delay in replying, but the priest in Glin was on vacation, and then there were problems with the new IRO site.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Kevin  & my dear friend Patti,

The Bridget MANGAN  ( born Shanagolden 1826 c) that is mentioned by Patti - who came out to her Aunty ( Mrs Sullivan ) at Emerald Hill ,Victoria & who married Owen TIERNEY ( Born Shanagolden 1834 c )  is one of MINE  !  I have Bridget as the eldest  of 7 children born to Thomas Mangan & Anastacia Egan.

Owen Tierney was a brother of my GG Grandmother - Mary Tierney who married Patrick Martin.

.Owen & his future bride came out on the same ship together.

As Patti has stated - Bridget Mangan's sister - Ellen also came to Australia & married Garrett  Fitzgerald.

Bridget's brother - Thomas went to San Francisco & died there. I am unaware of what happened to Bridget's 3 other brothers or her other sister.

Interested in hearing if anyone is connected or knows anymore re this family.

    Cheers Colleen
