Hello All. I am researching the emigration of my great-great grandfather,Dennis Sheahan, and his siblings from Shanagolden to Canada in the early 1840's and would like to connect with any relatives in Ireland. Dennis Sheahan was the son of John Sheahan and Mary Fitzgerald, born in 1828 and baptised at Shanagolden Parish. John and Mary had (at least) four other children: Anastasia, John, Gerald and Johanna. Anastasia was the oldest, born in 1821 ( Ibelieve), She married John Reddan in 1839. They had a son, Patrick, in 1840 who was baptised at Shanagolden. Anastasia had another son in 1844 in Toronto, Canada. So, these dates indicate they made their way to Canada between 1840 and 1844. Later records document that Anastasia and John Reddan (spelling was changed to Redding at some point) along with Anasatsia's brothers, Dennis Sheahan and John Sheahan arrived in Toledo, Ohio in 1852. John and Dennis both settled in Toledo and raised families there, living near one another. Anastasia's husband John Reddan died in 1844 in Toledo. She re-married a man named Michael Clohesy, had four more children and later moved to Dayton, Ohio. I am interested in information about John and Mary Sheahan and their other children, Gerald and Johanna as well as emigration records. Thanks!

  • Hello Mark, I have a JOHN and MARY SHEAHAN listed as godparents at Glin on 30 Oct 1851 to baby Elizabeth O'Brien. It is also interesting to note your mention of the REDDY name as CORNELIUS O'BRIEN (Shanagolden Limerick) listed his parents as CORNELIUS O'BRIEN & JOHANNA REDDY.  CORNELIUS & ELIZABETH lowered their ages to allow them to emigrate to Sydney Australia in 1853 and some of the older children had to stay in Limerick.  I have posted the names of the numerous godparents on the Co Clare pages as I would like to find more to my ELIZABETH McMAHON......Good luck.

  • Hi Mark.

I did some checking with the info you supplied for your Sheahan family from Shanagolden.

There are two trees at Ancestry.com. One the contact person is (I assume) you? MSheahan54. The other is a FERRIERI Tree and the contact person is Jmomcis.

I believe I have found Anastasia's death 3 Jan 1894 in Dayton, Ohio. The record is in a database named, "Ohio Deaths and Burials" at the LDS site (www.familysearch.org)  The person who has the Ferrieri Tree has her death 3 Jan 1894, and he found it in Civil War records. Apparently Anastasia's second husband served in the Civil War. Anyway, an interesting thing that turned up was a Clohessy rcd in Ballygarry Parish in the Griffith's. I wonder if Anastasia knew her 2nd husband while she lived in Ireland? Ballygarry and Shanagolden are only 30 kms apart, and there was a "Widow Clohnessy" listed in Griffith's. Maybe her son Michael (?) had already left for the US? Or he could have been still a child? I did not check to see what year the Griffith's was conducted in Ballygarry.

I checked both Ancestry.com and also MyHeritage for info regarding this family, and only found the two trees at Ancestry.com.

You could use the online parish rcds (http://registers.nli.ie/) to try to build the family out to a later date. Perhaps you could find living relatives that way?

Wishing you success with these suggestions,
