Hello,

I'm hoping that I can get some help in finding out more about the family of my great-grandmother Catherine Finn (nee Jordan). According to Killeedy parish registers Catherine was baptised June, 1875, in Ashford to parents John Jordan and Bridget Casey.

This couple were married in the chapel of Ashord, Broadford, October 31st, 1870 and had 6 children in Ashford - of which my great-grandmother was the 3rd:

Eliza b. 1872  (married John Carroll); Cornelius/Con b. 1873 (married Hannah Shaughnessy); Mary b. 1877 (married Michael Harte); Margaret b. 1879 (married Jeremiah Geary and Garrett Hayes) and Johanna/Hannah b. 1879.

John Jordan had two children by his first wife Catherine Roche (who appears to have died in childbirth in Gortnaclohy, Broadford in 1869) also in Ashford:

James b. 1865 (married Catherine Linehan) and Ellen b. 1867 (married John Bruce).

John Jordan himself was born about 1836 in Broadford to James Jordan (a sexton) and possibly an Ellen Browne.

Bridget Casey was born about 1842 in Ashford to Thomas Casey (a weaver) and possibly to mother with the surname Shaughnessy (though not sure).

John and Bridget moved to Milford whilst my great-grandmother and family were young and show up in the 1901 and 1911 census there, as do most of their children

It was also said my great-grandmother went to the workhouse for a short time (may have been while having a baby out of wedlock - my grandmother's sister around 1902). I know no more of this.

Again if anyone can help me find information particularly further back on the family of John Jordan, and Bridget Casey (there may be descendants of these families living in the Ashford area), I would be very grateful.

Many thanks,

Edward Fitzpatrick,

Shropshire

  • Hi Emma,

Many thanks for fowarding on my message; I am grateful for any help on my family search.

Just to add - my grandmother is buried with my gr-grandmother Kathleen Finn at Killeedy cemetery. I have been to this grave a couple of times but as I live in Shropshire -  it's not easy! I believe there are other Jordan relatives buried in this same area.

    Many thanks again,

    Kind Regards,

    Edward Fitzpatrick

  • I can confirm that John Jordan married a Bridget Casey in 1870 in Killeedy RC parish.

And that John Jordan's father James Jordan married Ellen Browne in 1835.

It also appears that they had four children.

Your John Jordan born in 1836, William Jordan born in 1838, Bridget Jordan born in 1844, and Mary Jordan born in 1848.

The following link lists all Jordans in County Limerick from Griffiths Valuation. There are three James Jordans listed. Two in Killeedy and one in Ballingarry.

Should I locate more information I will post it.

  • Many thanks for finding the information you have about my John and James Jordan.

I had looked over the Griffiths Valuations concerned before and it's certain my James is one of those you list.

I look forward to anything else you may be able to find in the future.

    Many thanks again.

  • Edward

My 2x Great Grandmother Mary Jordan married Patrick Furlong on 12.2.1887 in Ashford Church. She is noted on the record as being from Gurtnaclogha and her father was William Jordan who was a shoemaker and deceased at the time of their marriage.

I presume my 2x Great Grandmother is related to your ancestor. I'd love to share what information we have. Please email me at gillanemurphy2012@gmail.com.
