Hello,  Been looking for a William Benson.  We believe he was born in1820, in Limmerick, Ireland

Not sure when he came to USA, but he was in San Diego County, Ca. about 1849.  My GGrandmother Caroline Benson Quisquis was born on the San Pasquel Mission Indian reservation.  Her mother was Marie Antonia Quisquis, Native American.  We have searched military records, there are alot of William Benson's and we can not connect them to Ca.  Church records state he was legitament father of Caroline.  In the church records he is referred as Capitan William Benson.  Not sure if he is one of the San Patricios, can not seem to find a roster of names for them.  One rumor said he returned to Ireland, another said he was in Custer's Last Stand.

Any help will be appreciated, Thank you, Fondly Frances Earnhart

  • Hi Frances

There is a baptism record of William Benson in Limerick 1817 on www.rootsireland.ie/ - a site which requires payment

The record will have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names

There are also some public member trees on ancestry.com (Watt Family Tree) which have his birth as 15 Feb 1817 so the above record looks promising. They have the parents as John Benson and Mary Grady and when I added those names to the search criteria on the above record it checked out so that is definitely your man!

Another tree (William Joseph Avila Garcia) has his arrival as 28 May 1849 on the Immigarnt (source is Irish Immigrants New York Port Arrivals 1846-51

I just found your post from 2014.   I am beginning my search for my great great grandfather john benson born in Limerick about the same time as William.   John married his wife, Agnes, in pa.  My great grand mother, Katie, was born in Tenn.  But ended up in San Francisco at the Presido where  Katie met my great grandfather William Johnson.  John and William were "Indian Fighters".  After leaving military all went to Grand Island, Neb.   I would love to hear of your progress.   I am planning to visit Limerick this fall.   The best info I have is his military records.  John also fought in theCivil War.
