I am from Topeka, Kansas, USA.

I am searching for O'Shea/Shea kin from Broadford/Dromcollogher, County Limrick, Ireland.

Matthew O'Shea b. 1805 - d. 1885 married Mary Quin/Quinn.  Most of their children came to America and settled in Kansas.  Johanna O'Shea Brennan (married Bartholomew Brennan) and Margaret O'Shea Kelly (married James Kelly) died in Ireland, however some of their children came to America.  David O'Shea (married Mary Halloran from Dromcollogher), Bridget died single, Ellen O'Shea married John Browne, and Mary O'Shea married Matt Hoar all came to Kansas.  Patrick O'Shea (1846-1908) stayed in Ireland and is buried in Springfield Cemetery, Broadford, County Limerick, Ireland.

Would like to have any information on any of these people. Some of those that stayed ended up in Ashford, Co. Limerick, Ireland.  Bridget had a business there before she came to America in the early 1900's.  Patrick O'Shea had a pub in Ashford also.

Will be visiting the area in February 2014.

Thank you,

Linda McGinnis

  • Linda:

I looked at the Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and found a Matthew O'Shea in Tullaha townland which was part of the village of Broadford.

I looked on Roots Ireland indexes but could not find the marriage record or baptismal records.

I did locate the 1901 census record for Bartholomew Brennan in Tullaha. Johanna had died probably in 1894. See record below. I also found Bridget O'Shea in the 1901 census.

  • Thank you so much for your reply and for the links, I shall visit them all.

I have heard that the catholic church records at Dromcollogher were destroyed in a fire not too long ago. How sad.

    I do appreciate your help.

    All the best,

  • John,

Thank you for your help.  Did you also find the births of the children you listed on Roots Ireland?

If I go there and search will I be able to see this information?

I only ask as these birth years do not match the birth years I have for the same children.

Thank you again, I do appreciate your information.

    All the best,
