Maurice COLLINS and Bridget LYNCH Family

Do you know the location in Limerick?

According to research by another family member, an Helena (Ellen) Collins, born 1827 in Askeheon, Co. Limerick, married an O'Sullivan from Co. Cork emigrated to S.A. in1855.

Significance is a handwritten letter by one of their children (letter dated 1879) refers to a Maurice, which is not a common name. Other names throughout the family are similar to yours family: Catherine, Patrick.

I suppose the Death Certificate of Maurice COLLINS did not reveal his parents' names.

Were Maurice and Bridget assisted or unassisted passengers? Does Qld public records hold passenger documents?

According to another researcher (a descendent of Catherine Collins & William Beckett), the family "migrated from Nantinnan and Kinry, Limerick".  They were assisted passengers and the ship manifest shows that Maurice is from Nantinnan and Bridget (Lynch) Collins is from Kinry.

You're right - the parents of Maurice are "unknown" on his death certificate.

I can certainly provide you with the passenger list, death certificate and any other docs on this family, if they would help you determine who this Maurice Collins is.  Please let me know how you want me to go about that.

It's early days for me yet. The letter is touching (can email you copy if you like) written by a dying man to his new bride. To me it seems slightly delirious; or maybe I don't know enough about the family to see the letter 'fit' the environment. The other interesting point of interest is the handwriting is immaculate - perhaps an amanuensis?

Given the author's mother was a Collins from Limerick, and the practice of re-cycling names is widespread the mention of a 'Maurice' in the letter struck a note with me. I'm quite happy to email the letter dated 16th May 1878; the author died 6th Sep 1879 aged 30, his wife on 11th October 1879, aged 31. No offspring in the marrige 28 Feb 1878.  This system allows attachments of files. However I wonder if the files are publicly accessible?

My thoughts were some relationship (cousins?) in Co. Limerick between your Maurice Collins and my Helen (Ellen) Collins - in Ireland

In relation to the assisted migration to NSW, have you explored the The New South Wales, Australia, Immigration Deposit Journals, 1853-1900, and the New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896 details such as name, age, occupation, address in Ireland & parents details may be listed.

I see that the Immigration Deposit Journals start in 1853, but my Collins family came to Oz in 1848; also I have the passenger list and the names, ages, towns they came from (as mentioned in my last post), and occupation for Maurice are all given - but no parents' names.

But I won't lose hope - maybe there's some connection with your Collins - and maybe someone related to both our Collins families will eventually turn up.

Hi KellyOZ My Grandmothers, Gradparents were William Edward Beckett and Catherine/Katherine (nee Collins). Hence Mary Ellen Beckett married Richard George Adcock and their daughter Venice Sarah Catherine Adcock was my Grandmother. Catherine migrated to Australia with her parents Maurice and Bridget and settled in Ipswich Queensland Australia and both died there. Maurice in 1866 and Bridget in 1888. Catherine and William built the homestead of Tartulla Station in Queensland. Sadly Patrick, the brother of Catherine was hung at Boggo Road Jail in 1872 for murder. long story there. William is buried at Surat (near Roma) and Catherine is buried at Toowong in Brisbane (i don't know why but she is buried with and Isabella Kate Beckett who died 22 years after her) I am currently searching Ipswich Queensland for the gravesites of Maurice and Bridget as when Maurice died the Ipswich General Cemetery was not in use at this time. I have a photo of Catherine but not her parents or her husband. Maurice and Bridget are listed on the NSW Australia assisted immigration passenger list 1828 - 1896 Catherine and William had 12 children. Thanks for this information re Nantinan's location. It's interesting to know close it is to Askeaton?

I've an ancestor Helena (Ellen) Collins who was baptised at "Askeaton"  (per transcription), or 'Askeheon' per 1914 obit in South Australia.  Her first 3 children (born in Ireland) were John Patrick, Thomas and Maurice.

The proximity to Askeaton and the similar Christian names could suggest some connection.  Are you in Ireland?

Bridget Lynch who married Maurice Collins and emigrated to Australia in 1848 was the sister of my great great grandmother Margaret Lynch who married John Guerin and lived in Kilcornan Co Limerick.
