We are looking for information on my Grandfather who was born in/near Limerick.  Our goal is to find his birth certificate or his parish baptismal record.

Grandfather name:  Michael J. Ryan (b. June, 1879 in Limerick)

Grandfather's Parents:  Patrick Ryan (b. 1839) and Julia McGrath (b. 1838); married 1859 in Limerick.

(I am assuming that Patrick and Julia were born in or near Limerick.)

According to "Roots Ireland", Michael J. Ryan's address was "Castletroy" and his Parish/District was "Annacotty".

Please direct me to the possible parishes in which he could have been baptised or information on how to obtain his birth certificate.

I apologize for being so uneducated in genealogical processes and thank you so much for your help!

  • Denise,

Castleroy is probably Castletroy. It?s a townland, just to the east of Limerick city, and which falls within the civil administrative area of Limerick city. So any birth there would be registered in Limerick.

There are two Michael Ryan births registered in Limerick in the period Apr ? Jun 1879, so you may need to buy both, in the hope that one is the correct one.

The details are Limerick Apr ? Jun 1879 Volume 5, page 473; the other Apr ? Jun 1879 Vol 5, page 492.

You can order a photocopy of the certificates from GRO Roscommon for ?4 each.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter, volume and page number they should find it.
