I am new at this gen. tracing but have been told my irish forebears came from ireland. My grandfather or great grandfather was Daniel Duggan and he and his brother Rodger (or Roger) were sent to Australia, Tasmania for stealing in the 1800's.

My grandmothers peole came from around Kildare (I think) in County Clare.  Captain Phillip Kennedy and two of his brothers came out to Australia. settling in Tasmania in the last half of 1800's.

Would really appreciate any help you can give me.  I've always had an avid interest in Ireland as they tell me I spoke with a  real Irish twang when I was very young.  Must have been a throw-back there somewhere.   Thank yu very much.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

I did a search for Daniel and Roger on the National Archives of Ireland Transportation Database. Results came back for both names in 1848, in Limerick for larceny so I assume that these are the brothers:

As the trial took place in Limerick I suggest that you contact Limerick City Archives to see if they can advise you on any possible records that may exist:

You could also try looking in newspaper archives to see if there is any mention of the brothers. It may give a parish of origin. You should contact the Local Studies Department of Limerick Library to see what newspapers they have available:

    You could also try  http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/

Once you have a more specific place of origin for the brothers more avenues of research will open up to you.

You mention that your grandmother?s people are from Kildare in Clare. Unfortunately, Kildare and Clare are separate counties. Where did you get this information? Is it possible that the ?Kildare? part was misread? There are alot of parishes in County Clare that begin with ?Kil?, here to a list of parishes:

It may be an idea to contact the Local Studies Department of Clare County Library, they have an excellent county collection of records and resources. Here is the link to their contact page:

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Maureen,

I've been working on the Duggans but can't find a record to give me Daniel or Roger's ages.

They arrived in Tas in 1850 and were pardonned in 1853-54.

They were tried in Limerick but the records on findmypast have them in prison in Dublin in 1849. (The file is too large to attach).

If you can give me an age and the year of that record I can get a birth year and search on other sites.
