Hi,

I am the great great grandson of Johanna McCarthy (1833-1909).  She was in the Kilmallock Workhouse with her sister Nora in the 1840s after the deaths of her parents James McCarthy and Julia Bolding.  In 1849, they were shipped off to Austrailia on the Elgin, as part of the Famine Orphan Program.  She married Michael Callaghan inMlbourne in 1860 and the immigrated to California in 1865.  Any information or hints on further research are welcome.  Thank you.

  • Are you looking for ancestors in Ireland or descendants further afield?

You can get a copy of their marriage certificate on BDM Victoria (google it).

Also findagrave has a photo of their headstone + Further family information.

Honora Callaghan was born in Carlton Victoria Au 1863 Registration 3694 as was the 2nd. child.

Website   callaghansofbirdslanding, com  has a lot of information - well worth a look.

Google gives a few sites to search.

I hope this helps in your research.

    Cheers from Australia

  • Hi Kevin.

The tithe applotments of 1832 list these McCarthy's in Ballingaddy See Link
I am in LImerick and originally from the area, not far from Ballingaddy.  I saw a short newspaper article about the orphan girls that were shipped to Australia some time back but unfortunately there are very few surviving records that would link them back to places like Ballingaddy which is a short distance from Kilmallock.  Kilmallock Catholic records start from 1837 but no births are recorded for those parents.
The only source that I know about for Kilmallock Workhouse is the minutes books, that is the minutes of the Poor Law Guardians who were responsible for the running of the workhouse.  The books are held by Limerick Council and I have seen one of them for 1841-1842.  Unfortunately they did not go into much detail about the people they referred to as "the inmates" and hardly ever mention their names.  It is unfortunate that the admissions books do not survive.
Census records from the period were destroyed by edict during to first world war to recycle the paper and the remaining censuses of 1821 and 1880 were destroyed in the public records office fire of 1922.
Very sorry that I can't be of more assistance here.  If you know of any sources that need to be accessed locally please get in touch and I will try too help.
    Keep safe
    Tim

  • Thanks, Clementine and Tim,

Actually, I am the one who wrote and posted callaghansofbirdslanding.com.  I have the marriage record from St. Francis in Melbourne.  That was how I learned Johanna's parents' names and where she was from.  I have been searching unsuccessfully for any descendants of Johanna's sister or Michael's siblings in Australia for many years.  There are a few tantalizing dna hits, but nothing has panned out so far.

    Thanks for the help.  Slainte,

    Kevin
