My maternal great grandmother was Eliza Jane Heffernan      She was the daughter of Thomas Heffernan      They came to Victoria Australia from Ireland in 1854 on the Phoebe Dunbar.

Her Victorian Marriage certificate states she was born in LImerick though Thomas's states that he was from Tipperary

Any information about their Irish history would be welcome       Margaret Alexander

  • Thomas Heffernan,

Do you know his Wifes Maiden Name,

That would help with the research.

    Regards

  • Hi Meg

There is a record of a baptism of Elizabeth Heffernan with father Thomas in Limerick 1834 on www.rootsireland.ie However the mother's name is not Anna or Donahoe

You didn't mention her birth year; that would make her 20 when she arrived in 1854

I notice the Assisted & Unassisted Passenger List to Victoria on ancestry has her aged 15 & arriving with a Margaret Heffernan aged 25 but both are from TIPPERARY but I couldn't find a Tipperary birth/baptism record for either girl. However there is a record of a Margaret Heffernan with father Thomas born 1838 in Limerick!

The Tithe Applotments (free online) 1823-37 have 127 Heffernans in Tipperary including 3 Thomases

There are 64 Heffernans in Limerick but no Thomases

  • Thank you for your posts Col and john I have checked the certificate again..Marriage.. and it definitely says Thomas.
There was no information on Eliza's death certificate. The poor thing had a sad end She died in the Melbourne Lunatic Asylum ! in 1874 aged 34 of TB and Mania ! She had had 5 children 2 of whom died at or soon after birth. There was no information about her parents or husband and family on the death certificate so she must have been alone
    RIP Eliza Margaret
