Below is an 1871 civil birth index record for Edward O'Brien in Co. Limerick. Not sure if this is your Edward but the year and location match. You cna get a copy of this record for around 4 euros from the General Register Office. The record would show the names of the parents and where they lived. I provided instructions below the index record.

    Roger McDonnell

    First Name Edward
    Last Name O'Brien
    Year 1871
    Registered Quarter/Year 1871
    Registration District Limerick
    Volume 10
    Page 550

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has an 1857 marriage record for a Cornelius O'Brien and a Catherine O'Leary/leary in the RC parish records for Rockhill and Bruree parish. Not sure if this is your ancestors. Roots is a pay site to see the transcription of the church record.

I also searched www.familysearch.org  (which is free). I searched for O'Brien children born to Cornelius O'Brien and Catherine O'Leary from 1864-1880. Two baptismal index records came up. One for a Cornelius O'Brien born 11/3/1865 in Bruree to Cornelius O'Brien and Catherine Leary and the second was an Edmond O'Brien born 4/23/1868 in Bruree to Cornelius O'Brien and Kate Leary.

Based on this information, I'm wondering if the 1857 marriage was for a different couple with the same names.

I thought I would share this information and let you decide what is relevant.

I am ashamed with myself for not replying to all the information you have made available to me.

And I fear it will be a little longer before I get a chance to do any further research into our ancestry.

I have no intention of giving up and will return to this venture as soon as I am able.

I most graciously thank you for your research, I’m sure your efforts will not be in vain.

    Sincerely Nicholas

  • Hi Alfy.ca:

I'm going to forward your thread to a volunteer in County Limerick who may have some information about this family.  They should reply to you within a week or so.  We have a very good volunteer in neighbouring Croom who can assist you.

Many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

    Stay safe and well.

    All the best,

  • Hi Nicholas,

As Roger told you previosly, the records are now available online. There are  a few websites that hold records.

www.rootsireland.ie has a searchable database of Catholic Church records. There is a fee for using the site but it can be purchased on a daily, monthly or yearly basis.

Civil records are available on the link below( Free)

    https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

The census 1901/1911 census are available to search on http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ (Free)

    Property records

Records of a place can provide useful information about where your ancestors lived. The main sources for records of place are Griffith's Valuation, the Tithe Applotment Books, estate papers and maps. They are available at https://www.nli.ie/en/griffiths-valuation.aspx (free)

I hope you will be able to find some information to help through these sites.

Corneilus and Catherine were from Bruree, a village south-eastern County Limerick where Eamonn De Valera was raised. Edward/Edmond O'Brien was born in 1868. Their marriage took place in 1857.

If you would like any more assistance, please let is know.

    Take Care
