On my father's birth certificate my grandfather's birthplace is given as Kildimo.

He was born around 1849-1851 and was named Gerald Fitzgerald.

He was in Australia and married by 1879.

I am trying to find out more about him and the family in general.

Cheers Kerry

  • Kerry:

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has three baptismal records in Co. Limerick from 1847-1853. Unfortunately, none of the three are in the Kildimo RC church. Roots is a pay site to view transcriptions of church records.

I also looked at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kildimo parish.

    http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/limerick/kildimo.htm

There were 28 Fitzgerlad entries so it would be difficult to determine which one may have been the father of Gerald. Possibly Gerald named his oldest son after his father?

Thank you, Gerald's first son was named John. I believe Gerald's family (parents and siblings) also emigrated to Australia but have so far not found them on any ship lists that are available.

  • My Father has a DNA match on Family Tree, to a Shea family that mixed with some Fitzgerald's in Curaheen, Limerick (Right near Dromore Lough)
I know nothing about this, but the DNA is pointing me there, but it's placed around there in around 1800.

I descend from a Cork City Fitzgerald around 1800, but believe via the DNA, there is a West Cork / Limerick connection earlier on.

My great grand parents, Robert Fitzgerald (c1814 - 1873) and Margaret Dundon (c1813 - 1873) came from Kildimo.  They arrived in Australia in November 1841. Robert's parents were Robert Fitzgerald and Bridget Flannigan.  Margaret's parents were John Dundon and Elizabeth Fahey.  A witness to Robert and margaret's wedding was Edmund Fitzgerald - do not know what the relationship was. I thought perhaps Kerrylou's Fitzgerald's from Kildimo might also be mine.  I have done an Ancestry DNA if anyone likes to compare matches. I did have a map of land allotments in Kildimo with names on the allotment but can't locate it or the source I found it on.  On the boat Robert and Margaret travelled to Australia on, the Albatross, there were two girls, Eliza Kennedy, aged 15 and Margaret Kennedy, aged 21. Their father's name Michael Kennedy from Kildimo, who was widowed.  Robert and Margaret said on immigration papers that they would look after the girls.  No relationship is stated.  Would anyone know anything about these girls? Regards  Margaret Williams

  • It is my understanding that the Kennedy girls who travelled to Australia on the Albatross in 1841 with Robert Fitzgerald and his wife Margaret, also had their brother William aboard.  There is some mystery surrounding Eliza who I believe is my 2GGM, she married James Murphy in Windsor NSW in 1844, but later records suggest her parent were Henry Bateman and Maria Alphonso.  You can read more about her here - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bateman-669  Would love to know if there any any connections to these names in Kildimo?
