After years of searching, I may have located the origin of my SHEEHAN family, in the parish records of Freemount.   I know that my ancestor John SHEEHAN was born circa 1850 to Patrick SHEEHAN and Mary HALEY.  Recent release of parish records has turned up a marriage of Patrick and Mary in 1841 and also a son born in 1843.   While I cannot be sure this is the right family, there is a good possibility.  No other known children were born to this family.

Would like advice on furthering this search, and trying to identify which of the localities nearby was home to this family.  I have looked at Griffiths and Tithe websites, but am not quite sure if this can draw any conclusions

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I wanted to point out that most of the parish of Freemount is actually in Co. Cork. Here is a link to the current day parish in Milford http://cloynediocese.ie/parish-milford/   with subordinate churches in Tullylease and Freemount. There are three civil parishes in North Cork which correspond to the 19th RC parish of Freemount/Milford namely Kilbolane, Tullylease and Knocktemple. I looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for the three parishes and there were Patrick Sheehan records in Tullylease and Knocktemple.

I did not know if the marriage record or the baptismal records showed a townland.

  • Roger,

Thank you so much for these indexes.  That website is better than what I was using and having the dates helps too.  Neither the baptism nor marriage that I have give a townland, but I think the sponsor at the bapt is Maurice Haly which may be a clue as there is a Maurice Healyin Kilberrifert as well as Sheehans.  As far as we know, family history says that one of the parents died when John was a baby and one when he was about 12.  We have no idea where he went in the interrim, before he emigrated to US, circa 1867-1870.  So many unanswered questions but at least a little hope if he wa from this parish.  Can you tell me exactly where the church would have been in the 1840's and is there anywhere else to go to get more data.

    Thanks,

    Bev

You probably need to contact the parish to see if they can tell you.
