I am traveling to Ireland first week in May. On my travels I want to stop in Toomaline, Doon, Co. Limerick to see where my paternal great-grandmother’s Lizzie O’Dwyer (Dwyer) (1853-1891) family originated & possibly connect with a cousin. Lizzie was the daughter of Thomas O’Dwyer (abt. 1830) and Ellen Duggan (abt. 1830-1900) from Toomaline, Doon, Limerick. Lizzie was one of 8 children. From what I can tell two of her siblings Julianna (abt. 1855) and James (1851-1927) stayed in Ireland. I believe James married Kate Geaghagan (1855-1925) possibly in 1872 in Bellmullet, where they lived for a time before settlling again in Doon Town (south), Co. Limerick. They had 9 children Ellen, Thomas (1876-1957), Patrick, Elizabeth, James, Julia, Jeremiah and Michael. By the 1911 Census I found James and Kate in Grean Cloghaderren, Co. Limerick. Their children were no longer living at home with them. I have had difficulty tracing the children beyond that. Not sure if any Dwyer cousins remain in the area. Any leads will be appreciated.

  • If you want to see where Thomas Dwyer of Toomaline'a farm is on the map, go to griffiths.askaboutireland.ie

Type in Family name: Dwyer, first name: Thomas; county: Limerick, parish: Doon, Search.

He is the second Thomas and is in Toomaline. See the Details and Original pages and note that the farm number is 22.

Now open the Map page and Zoom in until you can see Plot number 22. That should help.

There is, or used to be, an O'Dwyers pub in Cappamore.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Here is a link to the online Irish phonebook which is only a partial list of phone users http://www.eirphonebook.ie/#  There were two Dwyer entries in the area around Doon Enter Dwyer and County Limerick and make sure you use the Residential Tab.

I looked on Roots Ireland and there are three Thomas Dwyer baptismal records in Doon RC in 1828, 1829 and 1830. Not sure which of these records are for your ancestor.

The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing does show a Thomas Dwyer in Toomaline Upper townland.

  • Hello

I am very interested to know how you get on in your search for the Dwyers of Toomaline/Doon. My 3rd gr grandfather, John Dwyer, was born in Doon in 1776. He unfortunately became one of a great number of Irish dissidents who found himself transported to Australia for being termed a rebel. John arrived in Australia in 1802 and became a model citizen, dying in 1844 in Appin, NSW. It is believed he left behind his mother, a brother a several sisters. Does this tie in with the Dwyer family you are searching for?

    Cheers and happy holidays

    Jill
