My gr grandparents immigrated and married in the city of Philadelphia, in 1872. In all the paperwork I have found pertaining to them, they only referred to their place of birth as Ireland. I just pick Doon as a hunch. I have been searching for 15 years or more to no avail. John J Ryan born in Ireland June 1852, He married Susan Doughtery,[born May 1859], in a Catholic Church, year of 1883 in Philadelphia. John J Ryan while in Philadelphia joined Limerick Guards a Hurling team in the year 1890-1900. This was a hint that perhaps he was from Limerick. The only baptism for a John Joseph Ryan I could find between 1850-1855 is in Co. Waterford in 1851 and therefore not relevant. I wonder if any newspaper archives would be of assistance to you, especially given his hurling links?

Have you looked at his actual gravestoner, looked at local church records, and found obituaries, especially in Irish community newspapers? References are often found there.
