Hi there, I am trying to track a family that came from Doon. The husband was Patrick O'Brien born 1838 Tipperary, the wife was Johanna nee Murphy born 1844, they married in Doon 26 July 1859. they had two children both born in Doon , Cornelious born 1860 and Catherine born 1862. Patricks father was Cornelious O'Brien and Johannas father was Robert Murphy according to marriage papers. The family sailed to New Zealand in the November of 1863 aboard the ship the Scimitar, it was Captained by a Captain Potts and it made the voyage in 108 days, it arrived in Auckland New Zealand 11 March 1864 . The voyage made the papers here as it was a very fast trip ( according to the times) But I would like to know why they came and who they left behind any help you could give me I would be most grateful...doing family research at such a distance can be hard...Sue O'Brien

  • Hi Sue,  I could not find marriage for Patrick and Johanna  in Doon 1859  on new free site,  www.registersnli.ie.  I could not find baptism for Cornelius born 1860.  I did find one Cornelius O'Brien on Griffiths valuation www.askaboutireland.ie.  He lived in Curraghfoil in parish of Doon.  Did you find them on the Schimitar's  shipping list.

I researched another Patrick O'Brien who went to New Zealand with his wife Mary Hogan and children in 1872.  They also were married in Doon in 1869  Best of luck with your research.  Let me know if you have any questions.

  • In case this helps:

I have an O'Brien family from Doon in my files. Luke Rowles of Cloonteen (son of George Rowles and Sarah Griffin) married Margaret O'Brien who lived right across the lane with her parents Bryan O'Brien and Bridget Morgan/Merrigan. (Source of name Merrigan: daughter Margaret's death certificate in Wisconsin, USA). Also in records: Mergin) Their other children were Jane (mar. John Ryan of Cappamore) and  Benjamin (mar. Catherine "Kitty" Power or Powell, her father David).

Griffith's Valuation 1851, Limerick, Parish of Doon, townland of Cloonteen, O.S. map 15-16, 1851/2; Bryan O'Brien occupied property #25 consisting of 13 acres(3r-12p. He rented a house and garden (2 r, 28 p) to John Franklin. of land, house and outbuildings on 7 acres (1p), and land of 1 acres (3r, 15p.) Bryan's house was across the road from George Rowles' house and land ("up the boreen").

There was a Patrick O'Brien and a John O'Brien in Curraghlahan townland (part of which is also on map 15-16.)  All were leasing from Hugh Massey O'Grady, Esq. of Castlegarde. Notes from Edward O'Brien's Uncle Tim say Bilboa, but the O'Briens actually lived in Clonteen. Most people couldn't tell the difference, according to Dr. O'Mahony of the Limerick archives. There were no O'Briens in Bilboa in either the Tithe Applotment books or Griffith's Valuation.

I am a direct descendant of the Patrick/Johanna O'Brien nee Murphy that you are researching.  Have been researching the family for past 10 years.  Have considerable data when living in New Zealand and some when living in Ireland. Would like to learn what you have and vice versa.  How do we make contact to discuss.

  • Hi Christina

Thanks for the advice.  Call me a dinosaur but to date I have resisted subscribing to Facebook finding email satisfactory for my purposes.  However it seems that is about to change in trying to contact Sue.  I don't think Sue has visited this site for some time so Facebook it is going to be.

    Regards

    Rob

  • Hi Rob, sorry I have been hard to get a hold of, I have only got some info on them once they are in New Zealand , we have nothing on them in Ireland at all, look forward to finding out how it all pieces together, I stuck a phot of my stepsons tattoo on as my profile pick so you can see that this clan of O'Briens are very proud of their heritage :)
