Hi,

I'm trying to trace my paternal grandparents who were married on 17th October 1908 in Cappagh, Co. Tyrone.

Their names are Stewart Doherty and Bella Doherty (nee Arthur).

Any assistance would be greatfully received.

Kind regards,

Tommy Docherty

I located Bella in the 1901 census living with an aunt and uncle. I could not find Stewart in the 1901 census but will keep looking. I also found the civil marriage index record which is below. If you request a copy of the record from the General Register Office (for about 4 euros), the actual record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they (bride and groom) were living in 1908.Instructions for getting a copy of the record are below the index record.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Hi Richard,

that was extremely fast work!!!  Thank you so much for all the information.  I'll get onto the GRO right away.  I'm not sure if this will help, but at some point Stewart changed the spelling of his surname and added a 'c' to Docherty.  My father thought this happened when he and Bella moved to Glasgow...

    Thank yuo once again.

    Kinbd regards,

  • Tommy,

I suspect that Isabella (Bella) Arthur?s birth was registered in Omagh Oct ? Dec 1882 Vol 2, page 258. You can order  a copy of that from the site that Roger has given you, or you can also view the record immediately on-line on the GRONI website:

I can?t find Stewart in the 1901 census either. Could he have been in Scotland at that time? You should get his father?s name from the 1908 marriage cert, so you will then be able to search using that criterion.

  • Hi Elwyn,

thank you so much for this information.  I'm trying to look at Bella's birth register but I can't access it without her date of birth.  I'll have to order it along with her marriage certificate.  I will continue the search for Stewart when the Marriage Certificate arrives.

Thank you again for your help.  It is much appreciated.

  • Tommy:

I looked in the 1901 censu for all counties for a Stewart Docherty and Stewart Dougherty with no success. Like Elwyn indicated, Stewart may have been in Scotland.

  • Tommy,

I suspect you aren?t using the GRONI site correctly. I did a basic search without a date of birth (which is free) and from it saw that Isabella was born 29th Oct 1882 and that her mother?s maiden name was Beattie. Since that is the surname of the family she was staying with in 1901 we know that?s the right birth. I suggest you go back to the GRONI site and have another go. It?ll cost you about ?2 to see her birth cert.
