Hello, I'm researching my great great grandfather's family.   His surname was A'Hern and he lived in London in the mid 19th century,  running a grocer's shop in Marylebone.  I have his wedding certificate which says that he was born in Limerick and that his father was Charles with listed profession being 'gentleman'.   Can anyone suggest how I can find out more about Charles and the Irish side of the family?  Many thanks, Lucy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You don't mention the given name of the son. Also, do you have an approximate year of birth? Do you know they were from Caherconlish parish or just Co. Limerick in general?

  • Hi Roger

Many thanks for the quick response.   My great grandfather was John Charles A'Hern, 1850 - 1927 and, I can't remember where, but I managed to find a Charles A'Hern (or Ahern) in Caherconlish listed as some kind of landowner.  I don't know for sure that that is the specific part of Limerick he was from though.

Charles is listed on John Charles' wedding certificate as a 'Gentleman' which I'm assuming to mean he had some kind of money or land but may be wrong.

I hope that's enough information for you.

    Kind regards

    Lucy

The Ahern's still reside in Caherconlish and the head of the household is still a Charles . The name Charles has passed down generations

Sorry for some reason I'm just now seeing your message of April 23.

I located an 1845 baptismal record for a Charles Ahern in Caherconlish on Roots Ireland. See transcription below. He also had a sister Johanna baptized in 1847.

  • Charles Ahern from Caherconlish is my dad’s brother...his other brother has been researching our family tree and I have a copy somewhere in my loft going back to 1740ish Or thereabouts...there is definitely a Johanna on there as that’s also my daughters middle name, hence it logged into my memory.

  • Hi Janette, I'm so sorry - I've just seen your response!  It would be great to see your brother's family tree if possible.  My branch of the family spells A'Hern in a specific way.  I've been given to believe this is because two brothers left Ireland and had an argument and one changed the spelling slightly to dis-associate himself from the other one.  I have no idea if this is true.  The Charles Ahern/A'Hern in my family had a son, John Charles (my g/g/grandfather) and a daugher Catherine who married Thomas Coleman and moved to Indiana, USA.  Anything you can find about Charles would be great - the only info. I have is that he was from Limerick.  Thank you, Lucy
