Looking for info on Patrick Quinn from Ballylanders

Have you tried looking in church records for more information? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. As you can see from the above link records there do not start until 1842. However, in the19th century new Catholic parishes were created so starting dates can sometimes be misleading. Many parishes changed their geographical spread so you may find earlier records relating to your family in the records of adjoining parishes

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:

My great-great-great grandfather was also Patrick Quinn (wife Margaret Whalen), and James Quinn was my great-great grandfather). James was born in March, 1833 in  County of Limerick. He married Mary Lynet at Defonscreek, Pickering Ontario on the 1st Sunday of Advent, 1853.  My great grandfather was Patrick Quinn, born in Brock, Ontario on March 17, 1862. He married Sarah McDonald and they lived in Gagetown, Michigan. (James Quinn and Mary Lynet moved to Huron County, MI at some point). My grandmother is Patrick and Sarah's daughter, Kathaleen (Quinn) Buser.

Also, Mary Lynet was born in County of Mayo, Parish of Ardoch in 1836.

Thank you! I do have that info about Mary Lynet and James Quinn probably from that sheet that a lot of people have! I wonder if there was a family reunion and it was given out?  I have a tree on ancestry that I have carefully put together starting with that document.  Some others on ancestry start the same but they got a little careless with the older individuals in the tree and didn't verify their additions. Let me know if you have any interest in looking!

My grandpa was Leland and I did have the opportunity to meet your Grandmother Kathaleen when I was younger. Do you live in Michigan too? Hope to hear back from you!

I am a volunteer researcher with IrelandXO.  I also come from the area.  As you are probably aware the Ballylanders church records are poor and start after the period you are interested in.  I was able to find these Quinn's in Ballylanders in the Tithe Applotments Book which dates from about 1829, all in Ballylanders parish.

This list records arable land with a liability for taxes payable to the Established Church.  It is possible that some of the duplicate names relate to second properties belonging to the same person.
The only Patrick listed in 1829 was in the townland of Curraghturk.  Curraghturk was part of the Kingston Estate of Mitchelstown at that time.   By 1854 the Kingston estate was indebted and the Landed Estate Court drew up a detailed list of townlands that it wanted to sell off, a sort of receivership process.  The list for Curraghturk contains a little bit of interesting detail.  By 1854 Patrick Quinn no longer held the property but the following is noted against a 10 acre property held by John Kennefick. 'Lease dated 28 October, 1824, from George Earl of Kingston, to Patrick Quinn for three lives of which the Honorable James King of Mitchelstown, County Cork, is the only survivor, now aged about 50 years, at the rent of 13s 6d late currency per plantation acre.'
The one above looks like the most probable Patrick Quinn but I did find another one.  Griffith's Valuation was published in 1852 and lists everybody who owned or rented property in Ireland.  In the published version there is no Patrick Quinn in Ballylanders but there is a set of handwritten notebooks from the late 1840's from which the information is compiled and one appears in the townland of Kileen.  This man seems to have been a smallholder like a labourer with a house and a small plot of land.  His entry was crossed out before publication.  Many people of this class were impacted by the famine which was then at its height so he probably would have left the country at that time.  If you want to look at these records they are on FindMyPast.com.

Thanks so much for trying to help me find any record of my family. I knew it would be hard since they left before civil records were started in Ireland. I had a cousin who actually visited Ballylanders and she told me she came up with nothing. I was hoping for a small miracle like on the genealogy tv shows where they can take you back centuries! :-)

You are right that the one Patrick Quinn makes sense since they are in Ontario, Canada for the 1851 Census... I will check out all the links but I might just have to accept that this is where my Quinn story starts. There are no death records or burial records for Patrick in Canada so there is no way of knowing what his parent's names were. I really haven't matched DNA with anyone in Ireland to lead me to believe there is still family on your side of the pond. :-(
