Researching DAVENPORT family, Martha DAVENPORT b. 1823-1830 Askeaton.

I believe Martha marries Michael O'DONNELL about 1840, son Thomas O'DONNELL b. 1841, Mary b. 1844, Michael b. 1844(?) in Askeaton.    They may  have immigrated to Gros Ile, Canada (1845-48?), and the elder Michael died onboard their ship.

Martha moves on to Mt. Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, USA and marries my Patrick LANE, by 1848.  There are other DAVENPORTs in Mt. Holly area, but I have not made a connection.

Can provide more details...have done little research in Ireland outside of familysearch.org

  • Bonnie:

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has the 1840 marriage of Michael O'Donnell and Martha Davenport in the Ashkeaton RC records. I also found an 1842 baptismal record for a Michael O'Donnell parents Michael and Martha in the Ashkeaton records. Also found an 1844 baptismal record for Mary in the same parish with the same parents. Did not find Thomas in Ashkeaton.

Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

  • Thank you!  This is probably where I got the speculation about the mariage and confirmation of the birhs, although I've not yet paid the money to get the actual transcription, just looked at the index.  Son Michael tells the story of being born in Ireland, his parents bringing him as a baby to Canada, and his father passing either on the ship or shortly thereafter.

You've now encouraged me to spend the money and get the full record.  Thanks for your effort and help!

  • Thanks, Roger.  I suspect this is where I got my expectation of the marriage and the births of a couple of the children.  Son Michael, in his U.S. Civil War pension file, tells the story of being born in Ireland, his parents coming to Canada on a ship when he was a baby, and his father dying either on-board or shortly after landing.  Young Michael is later "adopted" (not legally, of course) by his step-father Patrick Lane, and he goes by the Lane name throughout his adult life.

You've inspired me to finally spend the money to get the full record of the marriage and the births.

Thanks for your efforts and time.

  • Thanks, Roger.  I suspect the index is where I got the dates for the marriage and the births of the children besides Michael.  Son Michael mentions, in his U.S. Civil War pension filling, that he was borne to Michael O'Donnell and Martha in Ireland, they came to Canada when he was a baby, and his father's passing, either on-board or shortly after arriving.

You've inspired me to spend the money to get the full transcriptions of these records...I haven't done so as of yet.

Thanks for your time and effort.
