Kia ora from New Zealand.

We will be spending a few days in Ireland in September visiting my husband's afmily in Donegal, but this time we are also going to make a brief visit to Abbeyfeale. My great grandfather, John Twomey, was born in Abbeyfeale but emigrated around the 1860s to New Zealand. I realsie it is a long shot but I am wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for places to visit where there might be a connection. I have no other information apart from the fact that my mother as a child was in contact with a cousin, Michael Twomey, probably 1940s though! Any information gratefully received- and thank you.

  • Hi Rosemary,

The irish phone book (www.118.ie/) has 8 Twomeys in Limerick so you might want to drop them a line.

www.rootsireland.ie/ has 28 Twomey (+ surname variants) death records in Abbeyfeale Civil Parish from 1867 to 1910 but none that I looked at mentions a graveyard!!

Karina's public member tree on ancestry has John born 1858 in Limerick (calculayed from his age at death in NZ) but the baptisms for Abbeyfeale only start in 1864 on rootsireland.ie/

If he was RC you could have a look at the RC registers (free) at registers.nli.ie/ as they have baptisms 1844-56

The Tithe Applotments (free at titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 1 Twomey in Limerick in 1830:

John TWOOMEY Townland Coolrus Parish Ballingarry

There are no Twomeys or Toomeys in Limerick in the 1821, 41 or 51 Irish Censuses

I couldn't find any in Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 either

If Michael Twomey was from Abbeyfeale this might be him:

    Name:Michael ToomeyDate of Birth:03-Jan-1865
    Registration Date:05-Jan-1865Address:KnocknasnaParish/District:ABBEYFEALEGender:MaleCountyCo. Limerick
    Denomination:Civil Record
    Father:Thomas ToomeyMother:Mary HorganOccupation:Farmer

Abbeyfeale churches and church ruins on google might be of interest
