I am searching for Brittons of Cloonclare, william married Elizabeth Mccrea in1857 at Laghey.

His father also William was I think married to a Dorothea ?.  There may also be a robert Britton (son) baptised at Cloonclare in 1818.

Any Help would be much appreciated       thanks  A G Britton Cumbria England

    A.G.:

The top link above is a 1901 census record for Manorhamilton showing a Francis Brittan family (looks like Brittain on the actual record). The second link above is the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Cloonclare parish. There are three Francis Brittain listed (could be the same person) and one William Brittain living in Tullyskeherny townland. This could be the son or the father. The Francis could be the same person in the 1901 census or maybe his father or a relative.

I did not find the family in the 1911 census.

The Francis Brittain family was Methodist so I assume the William family was also. Unfortunately, it looks like the Manorhamilton Methodist records start in 1865 for marriages and 1876 for baptisms.

  • Hello Eddie, it has been a long while since I was on here and I am wondering if the Francis Brittain is my relation also .I think he may have emigrated to Nashua USA and will check that out. My G G grandfather William Britton had 8 children and one was a Francis. The surname changes a bit over the years and has been Britain also. William died at Bolton Lancashire in 1903. His Wife elizabeth lived until 1919.      best regards Tony Britton Cumbria. England

    Hello AG Britton,

New info has been added to my family tree on ancestry.co.uk

The tree is now called Tree June 2014.  It's viewable for free by the public. You need to register with Ancestry, but that's free.

If you look in the media section for an individual you will not only find photos, docs but also a short profile, provided I have found enough info, of course.

    My email is eddie.brittain@gmail.com

  • Hello from Tony Britton in Cumbria,  I have now finished a compilation of my family history book and it is on the web at "my canvass" and is titled the William Britton Family. I do hope you can find and open it. I have only got back to 1822 with William Britton and Elizabet Mcrea. It appears A Mr Mcconnell also has a tree which may link us as distant .cousins   Best regards Tony ,

  •   Hi Tony

i tried to find your history book on my canvas but had no luck. I think I found it on Ancestry.co.uk.

if that is you then the William Brittain/Britton born 1822 is different to mine as my William died in 1863 whereas yours is 1903. However both are the son of William and Dorothea from Manorhamilton.  My info comes from a family researcher called Rev Douglas Graham, who was the headmaster of Portora grammar school in the 1940s.  Hope this is of interest.  All the best

  • Hello Eddie , yes my history was compled via ancestry. the "my Canvass"is that offshoot of ancestry which compiled it all for me. I am fairly sure our Williams are related, my researcher is Gerard Neary who worked in the dublin records office. gerardneary@hotmail.com          I will get him on the case and be in touch again.   regards  Tony Britton.
