I am the grandson of Mary McKiernan, who was the daughter of Peter McKiernan and Bridget O'Rourke. They were from Aughawillan (?), Carrigallen. There were 11 children. Mary was born in 1882. She emigrated to New York CIty between 1900 and 1909 (?). Her youngest sibling was Ellen, who eventually lived in Calloughs and whose married name was Cunnion. Ellie herself had 11 children, including Peter, Tony, Anna Charles and Patricia Ward.

Mary, my grandmother, married Hugh Kiernan of Bawnboy, Cavan in NYC some time before 1911. Her siblings who emigrated to NYC were: Anna, John, Bridget and Elizabeth. Aunt Lizzie arrived in 1914, the year my father, John Peter Kiernan was born.

I hope to find out more about my great grandparents and great uncles and aunts who remained in Ireland.

From the 1901 census, it looks like Mary was born in 1878-1879. The townland was Aghawillin.

Here is the 1911 census. It appears two of Mary's siblings died between 1901 and 1911.

Peter and Bridget were married in 1876. The civil marriage index record is below. You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1901. if you want to get a copy, let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Hello John,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie to search for any birt or baptismal records for the children of Peter Mc Kiernan and Bridget O Rourke.

I found records for 8 children....

Thomas Mc Kiernan, father Peter, mother Bridget O Rourke baptised Co. Leitrim 1876

    Catherine    (as above) 1877

    Mary                            1879

    Bridget                         1881

    Anne                            1882

    Francis                         1885

    Elizabeth                       1890

    Ellen                             1896

All these records can be bulk purchased on the website and can contain valuable information.  You will also be able to purchase their civil birth certificates as it is after 1864.

I am now looking at www.ellisisland.org to see if I can find Mary's date of arrival.

Have you applied for Mary's death certificate.

  • I appreciate your response and confirmation of my grandmother's townland. I have now learned that Mary was bornin 1879 (per the kind reply of one Ann Dennehy). I had thought she was born in 1882. It is not clear to me who Peter and Bridget are. My father's Aunt Bridget amigrated to and married in NYC to the best of my knowledge.

    Regards,

    John

  • I'm stunned! Thought my grandmother, Mary, was born in 1882. I have taken a look at her death certificate on microfilm at the NYC archives, which suggest she was 53 at the time of her death in June 1936. A 3-year discrepancy is not big issue right now. The other names and dates are very meaningful. Bridget accompanied me home in July 1950. I have a picture of her  holding me with my father at her side. Elizabeth, whom we called Aunt Lizzie and Grandy, took my father and his 3 younger sisters in after my grandparents died within 4 months of each  other in 1936.

I reply from Yarmouth Port, Cape Cod, MA, where I'm visiting my 2nd cousin, Patricia, who  is the granddaughter of Elizabeth. Grandy died in 1984 at age 94. She was the widow of Patrick Coyle, also of Carrigallen!

    Thank you so much1

  • John:

    I'm confused at your comment:

"It is not clear to me who Peter and Bridget are. "

They were your grea-grandparents, right? As I mentioned in my first response, if you get a copy of the 1876 civil marriage record, you will get the names of their fathers.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    Roger

  • Hi John, I'm curious about your Bridget O'Rourke - your g grandmother. If her father was Peter O'Rourke who lived in the townland of Mullandaragh, parish Carrigallen there may be a link with my family. My Peter married a Brigid Reilly in 1847....
