Just wondering if anyone has ancestors named Carroll. I think it is a fairly common surname. My great grandmother was born about 1847 in Togher co Laois.area maybe. She married twice the second time being to a Michael Fitzsimons in 1878. I would love to find out who her mother was. The marriage certificate states she was the daughter of Michael Carroll And Mrs Carroll. I have tried a few different resources but to no avail. The census records for 1901 and 1911 dont help. Thanks.

  • Hello Eileen, we do not appear to have a volunteer around Laois currently and I just looked as I have Carroll ancestors I think in Tipperary and I cover County Louth and there are Carrolls in Louth in Togher but you apper to me to be correct as there is a Togher in Laois, there are two baptisms in Laois or Queens back then and one for 1840 in Maryborough (Portlaoise) hs a mother Mary Boyle. The other baptism is in 1843 and is for a Catherine with a mother Catherine Richardson, parish Raheen or Ballinagar. Both cases father is Michael. The 1840 birth is nearer to Togher.

I searched for a Moloney / Carroll marriage but without looking at them all as the Irish Genealogy site had not got images of marriages until later I found a marriage of a Catherine Carroll father Michael to a  Michael Mullowney odd spelling but it exists, father Daniel on 15th April 1867 in the RC Church in Abbeyleix which is 10 miles south of Portlaoise and about 6 to 8 from Togher depending on the start point. Have you seen this site, https://www.townlands.ie/ I find it helpful in placing townlands in Ireland to give a perspective of the area. There is also a death of a Michael Mullowney age 32 in 1873 recorded in Carlow, it is not possible to view the death certificate but Carlow is not too far from Laois, adjoining county and it is the only one in the general vicinity and with an appropriate age.

You can get copies of the actual enries entered emailed to you from the GRO here https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You might get a view of the church record here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0685

I have not looked for children of this marriage, the actual Irish Genealogy site is here but does not yet allow viewing of the marriage certs for this period but we are promised shortly, sign in but free.

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Select Civil records as the church records are not available for the counties under consideration on the site as yet.

  • I tried to send a reply the other night to thank-you but I'm not sure if it went through or not. So just saying thank-you again. Cheers.
