Hello Joanne, very late reply, church records are very sparse in that period and I can find no record of a Swift in Laois in that period, there is an Alice Swift born in Waterford, now the city it appears about 1803, father Denis, mother Eleanor Kenny but she most likely is not your one but there is no information to support it either way, there are a lot of Carrolls in Laois and one James baptised 1st Nov. 1795 in Ballinakill, Laois, father is also James and mother Bridget Quinlan, Catholic baptism.

There was a push in  Ireland around the time of departure to get people to move to Canada, newspaper ads etc

In this period the Swift name is mainly in Meath but in a lot of other counties in varying degrees. You can get surname distribution here free but then suscribe, https://www.johngrenham.com/surnames/ 

There are Laois private genealogy groups on Facebook but everyone will be in your position, also DNA matching sites using Gedmatch, read up before doing as not everyone is comfortable with it.
