My great grandmother Annie McInerney was born 1886 in Kilkenny she immigrated to the US in 1901.  Annie's parents were Thomas McInerney and Susan Walsh.

Planning to visit Kilkenny this coming September hoping to learn as much as I can about these ancestors before I visit.

    Hello Alice,

I have looked for the baptismal record for Ann on www.rootsireland.ie but can't seem to find it.  I can't find a marriage record for her parents either.  Can I ask how you came about your information?   Did Ann emigrate with her parents?

As she was born in 1886 you should be able to apply for her birth certificate.   Civil registration began in 1864 so you are well within the timeframe for a certificate.

Contact www.groireland.ie  to receive a copy.

If however you are taking this information from a tombstone or census then please keep an open mind.

Look forward to hearing from you soon,

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

Thank you so much for the prompt response.  Using Family Tree Maker and Ancestry.Com I was able to view Annie's marriage record from 1906 in Monson Massachusetts.  She was 21 (so her birth would have been 1885) she was born in Ireland and her parents were Thomas McInerney and Susan Walsh.  I have also found her in the 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 US Census.  Her birth date stays consistent in all documents as either 1885 or 1886. Her husband's age also stays consistent in these documents and are either 1881 or 1882 in New York City, so I feel the birth year is likely accurate.  I will check the source you suggested.  I have not yet located any immigration documents but in the 1930 US Census it states she immigrated in 1901.  The fact that she came from Kilkenny came from family knowledge.  Perhaps she was not born there.

I have not been able to find any US records for her parents, and there is no family knowledge of them, so I am thinking they did not immigrate.

    Hello Alice,

I went to www.ellisisland.org and found the passenger record for Annie Mcinerney.  She (as you said) went through Ellis Island on 14th June 1901. She gives her age as 18 years ( which would make her birth at about 1883 or so)  This makes sense as she wouldn't have been travelling on her own at the tender age of 15.   She travelled on the ship Oceanic.  When I looked at the original ship's manifest, it states that she is going to Monson Mass.  Her ticket was paid by her grandmother and it states that she is going to live with her grandmother.   It also states that she is from Killard (which is in Co. Clare). Her health is recorded as anemic.

This actually explains a lot.  Co. Clare is one of the very few counties whose records are not online so there is no way of getting the baptismal or marriage certs online. That is why I couldn't find them.   You will have to contact the Clare Heritage Society in person to find these records.  However you will by now be in the process of getting her birth certificate from the General Register Office at www.groireland.ie.

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Hi Alice,

I'm really sorry to confuse the issue, but the passenger list says that Annie was from Killard.  I went to www.askaboutireland.ie and found out that there are many places called Killard.  There is one in counties, Clare, Mayo, Down, Tipperary, Westmeath, Fermanagh, Cork and Limerick.

I would still put my money on Co. Clare as no records of your family can be found in the other counties. However I thought you should know.
