My 3rd great grandparents, Laurence Holohan and Ellen Purcell, immigrated to the Pennsylvania anthracite coal mining area in the 1850s. Laurence was born about 1822 and he married Ellen Purcell (born about 1823) in about 1843.

Through RootsIreland.ie I was able to find baptismal records for some of their children:

Ellen, baptized 3 Dec 1844 in Clogh, Kilkenny

Catherine, baptized 27 Jan 1847 in Clogh, Kilkenny

Mary, baptized 15 Sep 1849 in Clogh, Kilkenny

James, baptized 31 Jan 1853 in Clogh, Kilkenny

Andrew was born about 1859 in Pennsylvania and John was born about 1862 in Pennsylvania.

Laurence was in the 1870 census in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania with the family, but he does not appear with them in 1880. Family lore has it that Laurence did not like living in the United States and went back to Ireland. I am trying to find out if there is any truth to this or if he died in the United States.

Also, what parish would the children have been baptized in?

Thanks for any help with this! Merry Christmas!

  • Clogh is the name of a Catholic parish which included parts of the civil parishes of Castlecomer and Rathaspick. This area was in the civil registration district of Castlecomer, based in the town, so that's what should appear on the BMD Index for events registered in the area.

I looked at the civil death index records for the Castlecomer registration district an did not find a record for a Laurence Holohan (and variant names) in the 1870-1900 period.

It is possible, he went back and died but the death was not civily recorded but I would think he died in Pennsylvania.

  • Thank you for checking the index. Yes, he probably did die in Pennsylvania.
