James DALTON & Margaret (Mary?) COONEY (CONEY/COYNE) were my ggg grandparents.
James born c1775 & Margaret died after 1847 (***based on son John's transportation info)
Married c1828
Their Children:
*John, born c1827
Patrick, born c1831?
Sarah (Sally?) born c1833?
Mary (Margaret?) born c1835?
*John is my gg grandfather and mentioned in his later life the area of Inistioge, so working on the fact he was from there or closeby. He was caught and convicted in Kilkenny on 31 Dec 1846 (or 1/Jan/1847) at a trial of himself and a James Dalton & a Hugh Byrne. I do not know for sure if the **James Dalton was his father, but could have well been or if the Hugh was involved in same. John's offence was Felony (stealing ....& butter) from a Mr David Moore near Castlecomer. He was sentenced to transportation to Tasmania for 7yrs. He was held and departed by the ship Pestongee Bomangee3 on 20 Sept 1848 from Dublin and arrived Tasmania (Van Diemens Land) 2 Jan 1849. (I have all later info in Tasmania).
**I did also find a record for a James Dalton aged 72yrs (which could have been the father, if he was indeed involved in the crime), who was imprisoned on Spike Island, Cork, same trial date, sentence and ship. There is no record of him arriving in Tasmania so maybe he was too old to be transported? I do not know if he died on Spike Island or served his sentence and returned to his possible family?
***Further arrival info in Tasmania shows John, aged 19, single, Roman Catholic, his mother as Margaret, one brother Patrick, two sisters Sally & Mary - all living Co Kilkenny. No father mentioned, so I still think he may have been the James Dalton above.
I'd appreciate any further info on this family. I have found various Griffith Valuation records etc but nothing definate. I'd say they were Farmers or Farm Labourers. I cannot find births/baptisms/marriages for the 3 other children. I do not know for sure the spelling of the mother's surname either and whether she came from that parish also.
Thanks so much!

Hi Liz,
Same drill as with your other line, though less effort now you know the ropes and don't qualify for the special deal for Wallabies supporters!
The only James Dalton birth on www.rootsireland.ie/ around 1775 is 1774 in co Wickolw.
There are 3 marriage records for James Dalton & Mary ------ (none for Margaret) 1828 in Kilkenny & 1827, 1829 & 1830 all in Waterford
There are records of 2 of the 4 children's births in Kilkenny: Patrick and Mary. There are a lot more parishes to check for Kilkenny than in Louth so I'll leave that to you!
There are 137 Daltons in the Tithe Applotments in Kilkenny.
