My mother's great/great-grandfather lived in Conahy Parish at the time of Griffith's Valuation in 1848 and when he married 2nd wife, Elizabeth Flannery, 19 May 1845.  He was born about 1804 and had three children by a first wife, whom he married before 1830:  Garret, Margaret, and Anne.  He had two children with Betsy Flannery in Ireland:  Thomas and James.  (They had five additional children in Iowa.)

John's surname was spelled Cavanagh on his gravestone, but was sometimes spelled Cavanaugh, while records in Ireland spelled it Kavanagh and Kavana.

I would like to know the name of John's 1st wife, who was the mother of Margaret, my g/g-GM, and the names of both spouses' parents, and identify other living descendants.

  • I am sorry but I can't help much. Try looking in the Griffiths Valuation as to who was living nearby. Often people married folks who lived next door or a few plots away.

  • A 3rd cousin, Mark McKenna, went to County Kilkenny earlier in 2019 and worked with a genealogist (Mary Flood) at the Kilkenny Archeological Society.  They concluded that John Cavanagh's parents were most likely Garret & Margaret Cavanagh from Byrnesgrove, Ballyragget, County Kilkenny.  This is only about 8-10 kms from Conahy, so it's believable.  John's children with his first wife were:  Margaret (1830-1901 in Iowa); Garret (1831-1869 in Ireland); and Anne (1836-1880 in Iowa).  It's possible that the children were born in Byrnesgrove, rather than Conahy, where John marrried his 2nd wife.  If any of the children's baptisms coud be located in parish records, they would likely include the name of the mother (John's first wife), which is what we have been searching for.  You mentioned Kilmacar -- Mark McKenna and the genealogist also concluded that our other shared ancestor, James McKenna (who married John's daughter, Margaret Cavanagh), was most likely the son of Richard McKenna and Catherine Walsh of Kilmacar (also near Conahy).  Thanks for anything you can do to add to what we know.  Bill Bernardy
