My Ggranfather James White, born 1864 in Freshford, Kilkenny, along with siblings Catherine, Martin, Patrick, Michael, John and Thomas, to parents Michael White and Bridget Smyth (married 1859), immigrated to the states around 1889 and married my Ggrandmother Ellen Farley. I'm finding  White families in Ballyraggat and in Castlecomer in 1901. Trying to find out my GGgrandfather's (Michael White) or GGgrandmother's (Bridget Smyth) father and mother. I think these White families in Freshford might be related. I'ld like to go one generation back.

The marriage record below does not show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom. The 1849 Griffiths for St. John's civil parish shows a Martin White and a Bridget Smith. Not sure if they are related to Michael and Bridget.

  • I have a copy of that record and do believe they are my GGgrandparents. The witness names helped but I wished that their parents would have been listed. I am not aware of the 1849 Griffths record wih Michael and Bridget in St. John's parish. Who is Roger McDonnell, the landlord?

I found Michael White living in Donaghmore (Ballyragget) in 1849 and 1850. (maybe mine)

Michael and Bridget married in 1859 and had their children in Conahy parish between 1862 and 1876. There might be a child before 1862 but there is no record of it. (mine)

James (my Gg) and Martin immigrated to New York around 1885-1888. (mine)

I have found death records of brothers Patrick (1896-97), John (1898), Thomas (1899) and Michael (1901) at a Chatsworth address in Castlecomer leaving their father Michael and Mother Bridget. Michael dies in 1903 at 73 which puts his birth around 1830. (all the names fit)

I am now trying to find out Michael's father which I am assuming was born around 1800-1810. (????)

I also found a death record of a Michael White born 1812, dying in 1874, living in Ballyragget with householder Bridget White. He might be my GGGgrandfather living with his son, wife and grandchildren. (????)

Keeping track of the names of the civil and Catholic parishes along with the townlands on some of these records is very hard. But finding out that all these places are within a few miles of eachother made me realize I might be dealing with one Michael White, maybe giving up the farm and settling in town. I don't like guessing, but with missing records, that is just what I'm doing.

Thank you for reponding. I'll try to find that 1849 Griffths record.

    My name is Roger McDonnell.

Go to www.askaboutireland.ie to explore the Griffiths data for Martin White and Bridget Smith. The fact that there was a brother named Martin possibly named after the father of Michael.

  • I checked all Whites with the first names of James, Martin, Patrick, John, Thomas and Michael. I don't know how to narrow it down. There are so many.
I check neighbors looking for familiar names....maybe witnesses or sponsors listed on records. Maher is one of them.
Both Michael White and Bridget Smyth were from Dunmore when married in 1859. So I'll have to look for records for both families in the 1849 Griffiths.
The Martin White I found in Dunmore had so much property and I don't see a landlord. Is this the Martin you found?

The Martin White I found lived on New Road and just had a house and a small (less than one acre) plot of land.
