Hi,  I would be grateful if anyone has any information about the following couple (my great-great-grandparents).  Hope my scanty info is enough to go on.

John DALY born 1840 (place unknown) - Hanorah POWER born 1843 (place unknown).  No marriage date but will presume about 1863/1864 based on children's birthdates.

DALY CHILDREN:

(1)   Annie (no birthdate, place)

(2)   Jane E. born 9-1-1864 Dungarvan, Waterford

(3)   Mary Ellen (my GG) born 15-12-1865 Dungarvan, Waterford

(4)   Hanora born 31-8-1867 Waterford

(5)   Margaret 8-4-1869 Waterford

(6)   Peter (Ireland, place unknown)

(7)   Ellen "Nellie" 1-7-1873 Waterford

Will assume for new children (4), (5), (6), and (7) were also born Dungarvan

Departed 15-12-1876 on the "Alumbagh"  Arrived 16-3-1877 Port Adelaide, South Australia.  I have some family information from there on but virtually nothing about John and Hanorah, their marriage, who their parents were etc.  I would be most grateful for ANY information on them.

Thanks.

Shan

  • It appears that the details you've mentioned are extracted civil birth records from FamilySearch. These only show part of the information recorded in the register. These usually show just a registration district or county instead of a detailed location (e.g. name of the townland), and do not include father's occupation. A research cert from the GRO costing €4 would provide the additional details. Having the location could be a useful clue as it will enable you to establish the parish, and possibly find relevant details on land records like Griffith's Valuation or the Tithe records.

Many of the extracted records include a reference to the BMD Index needed to order the certs. e.g. Jane's birth extract includes 0594 at the start of the location, and this usually corresponds to the register page number also used on the index (note -Not all the records include a register reference)

The matching entry on the Index is as follows :

    Name : Jane Daly
    Event Type : Birth
    Registration Year : 1864
    Registration District : Dungarvan
    Volume 4 / Page 594

If you wish to apply for a research cert from the GRO let me know in reply here and I'll post the details.

Given the date of birth for Jane it appears that her parents would have married before the start of full civil registration in 1864, and unless the family were non-Catholic or they married in a registry office there will likely be no civil record for their marriage. There may also be older children born before 1864 (e.g. Annie ?), which like the parents marriage would only show up in church records.

RootsIreland pay-website has RC baptism and marriage records for most of the parishes in Co. Waterford, so probably worth trying for this family, although note that catholic parish records of marriage, usually include less detail than civil marriage record so will not include occupations, and probably not show father's names. I would suggest starting with a civil birth cert for one of the children to narrow down the location, and work from there..

  • Hello Shan,

Michael Daley of the DALY Surname Study here.  They were narried in Kilgobinet Roman Catholic Parish in 1863.

We believe earlier generations of both these Dalys AND Poers/Powers emigrated to Newfoundland, and from there to parts of both Canada and the United States.

If you would like to learn more you can email me at mdaley@albany.edu

    Best,

    Michael Daley
