Hello Tom,

I read with interest your request for info of Denis Melican 1864....

I am 5th generation Australian of  Mathew Melican who arrived in Portland Australia in 1848.....

Our family established themselves in Wangoom 10kms from Warrnambool in Western Victoria in 1852....

My father now aged 83 yrs is Michael Melican and the eldest of 4 brothers of the 4th generation..

Hope we may hear from you some-time as I would love to visit some-time the old country...

My known Melican ancestors lived in the Parish of Tulla, County Clare.  I have posted information about them there.  My great-great grandfather was John Melican who married Mary Butler.  He remained in Ireland despite his 4 adult children eventually immigrating to the United States. 

John had a brother named Matthew Melican who immigrated to Australia, arriving in Portland on 25 April 1854 with his family aboard the ship Almora.  Matthew was married to Margaret Donohue (1818-1887) and had 7 children - Bridget, Margaret, Ellen, Michael, Denis, Denis (the first Denis had died and a second Denis was born) and John.  Is this your family?

Yes this is my family.....Actually the farm house I lived in was called Almora and my parents lived in Newgrove...

Mathew's painted photo takes pride of place in my elderly parents home to this day, along with Mathews son Michael my father's grandfather..

My fathers brother Father Bill Melican has completed the family tree and my sister & many cousins have returned to Ireland to see what we all regard as out home land.....

We are a very proud Aussie's of Irish heritage......
