Hello

I have recently begun research into my family, I have noone left alive to ask about the family so am having to do it all from my own research. ie getting dearth certificates and working backwards, Until recently I didn't know any of my grandparents birth dates or the names of great grand parents.

I now know my grandfather's people on my father 's side were from Kyle Upper (or rather lived there) my grandfather William was born there in 1912,following his parents Patrick and Bridget Murphy, nee Kehoe, moving there after their wedding in 1909,and that is as far as I've got.

Family legend says that my grandfather had 3 brothers but I have no way of knowing if that was true (unless I find them)

According to the censuses and Griffiths there were several Murphys living in Kyle Upper going back many years but I have no idea if any of them are related to the family.

if anyone has any more information I'd love to hear from you.

  • Hi Liz,

The Tithe Applotments are freely available online.

If you search Murphy, county Wexford Townland Kyle you'll find 4 there: Peter James Phillip & Felix all in 1833.

I didn't have much luck on www.rootsireland.ie/ searching for William's birth or those of his siblings; I only got 1 match for children of Patrick and Bridget in Wexford - Thomas but he was born in 1899!

roots is a pay site but you might want to have a look on it yourself.

I also checked ancestry; it has Kilpatrick in Cork not Wexford.

  • Thanks for that Col :)

I know that the Patrick and Bridget are right and the dates, as I have the birth and marriage certs (also I'm here..Wlliam was my grandfather!)

Interestingly, on the 1911 census Bridget and Patrick live at 8 Kyle Upper and at no 7 there is a Thomas  Murphy (2 years younger than Patrick) living with a Mary Howlin aged 81 who is listed as a 'grandmother'  and 'head of household' ...he is also living with her in 1901 aged 14. On Patrick's marriage certificate there is a Thomas listed as his witness and Patrick's father is named as William.

I have been unable to confirm Patrick on the 1901 census there are several 15/16 year old Patrick Murphys but none are living with William Murphy and a couple are just listed as servants,so either his parents died and he was working to support himself or he was estranged from them in some way.If the Thomas above is his brother and is living with the grandmother perhaps the former is what happened.

I'd love to know the full story :)
