Hi, I am researching the Above named woman and believe that she was born in Tralee 1882 in 1906/7 married Reuben Montague Cunnington on 13 June 1917 Mary Philomena Cunnington was awarded the OBE for her efforts and courage during an Air Raid on Upper North Street School Poplar London.

The information I am after is her birth records with full name "Mary Philomena"

  • Thanks for the reply, Are they able to find birth records?

  • Not sure about access to birth records. I have access to the civil birth index records. The only Mary Philomena O'Donnell listed for the Tralee registration district was born in 1927 which is obviously not who you are looking for. There is an 1882 Mary O'Donnell in the Tralee district. Do you know the parents names?

  • Alan:

You can get a copy from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. If you need instructions, let me know,

  • Dear Alan, do you have a copy of Mary Philomena's marriage cert giving her father's name? This would assist greatly. Where did she marry? I am searching for a baptism record which might show the 2 names and so far have found no Mary Philomena. Can we be sure of the surname O'Donnell.

    I have found a Susan Philomena O'Halloran 1882 http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/a08e050489096

and Philomena Edith Marg Sullvan 1888 http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/4fe07c0491605

There are a total of 9 Mary O'Donnell's baptised in Tralee RC Parish between 1872 and 1886

    http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/search.jsp?namefm=Mary+&namel=O%27Donnell&exact=true&name2fm=&name2l=&location=Tralee&yyfrom=1870&yyto=1890&diocese=&parish=&century=&decade=&sort=&pageSize=100&ddBfrom=&mmBfrom=&yyBfrom=&ddMfrom=&mmMfrom=&yyMfrom=&ddDfrom=&mmDfrom=&yyDfrom=&ddBto=&mmBto=&yyBto=&ddMto=&mmMto=&yyMto=&ddDto=&mmDto=&yyDto=&locationB=&locationM=&locationD=&member0=&member1=&member2=&member3=&member4=&member5=&member6=&member7=&member8=&member9=&namef0=&namef1=&namef2=&namef3=&namef4=&namef5=&namef6=&namef7=&namef8=&namef9=&namel0=&namel1=&namel2=&namel3=&namel4=&namel5=&namel6=&namel7=&namel8=&namel9=&event=B&keyword=&submit=Search

However as you probably already know the Civil Registration District of Tralee and the Roman Catholic Parish of Tralee do not have the same boundaries and when we go into the 1901 Census, the DED's are different again. Was Mary still in Ireland in 1901?

Do let me know and maybe we can help you some more.

    Warm wishes

    Martine

Thanks for your reply, I am on iPad at the moment the information I posted came from "Upper North Street School bombing on 13 June 1917 killing 18 Children" I have been researching this event and have found nearly all the 18 children's Relatives, have now moved onto the Teachers that were Awarde O.B.E.s for their efforts that sad day.

Mary Philomena Cunnington was all I had to start with, on searching Ancestry it lead me to her maiden name being "O'Donnell", I will post all the records I have, later when I'm on big computer.

    Thanks.

    Alan.

The church register page containing this record has not yet been imaged.

    Report any error in transcription.

I put her sibs names through the freebmd  in hopes of finding the mother's name Hannifin with which to confirm but but no luck.

In order to confirm you will need her Civil Registration Birth record. Roger's suggestion is clearly the best match.

Have you sent off for it? Do let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Alan, Rathass is on the outskirts of Tralee. There is a large graveyard there and the Workhouse was there also. The Workhouse building is now the Kerry County Council Offices. It is spelled Ratass in 1901.

Do let us know when the Ceremony takes place Alan and thank you for letting us know of this unsung heroine. The local papers would probably be interested also.

  • Thanks again for all the replies the Ceremony will be held on 13 June 2017 at the Memorials in Poplar London.

I started this research for a Facebook Group that will be organising this event for 18 Children that were killed when a bomb was dropped on "The Upper North Street School Poplar London" which can be viewed on this link.

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/Uppernorthstreetschool1917/

At present we still need to find Relatives of three more Children so back to the grind for me, I don't know yet if any of the three originated from your neck of the woods but if they did I will be back with more questions.

    Alan.
